I can remember when “Switched on Bach” made a huge splash, back when Wendy Carlos was still known as Walter. Tranny trendsetter! I also remember that male second-rate tennis player who declared he was a woman and ran roughshod over the women’s tennis rankings. He was a sad figure. Was his names Morris? James / Jan? The travel writer? Or am I thinking of someone else entirely? More coffee please . . .

I remember a joke about him on SNL. He didn’t make a convincing woman after his, uh, metamorphosis. Before that, he didn’t make a convincing tennis player, and was worse as a fake woman.

The tennis player was Renée Richards, né Richard Raskin. According to Wikipedia, he’s still alive at 88. The travel writer James / Jan Morris is also still alive at 94. Richards is the sad, bitter one, largely abandoned by his family; Morris seems to’ve led a much happier life, still close to his wife and children.

If memory serves, in the liner notes, Glenn Gould called Carlos’ version of Brandenburg #4 the best he’d ever heard, “live, canned, or intuited”. While I hold GG in high regard, he was dead wrong.
