Long-term intermittent fasting reduces COVID-19 heart failure issues and death in heart disease patients
Medical Xpress / Intermountain Healthcare / American College of Cardiology / World Heart Federation ^ | March 6, 2023 | Benjamin Horne, Ph.D.

Intermittent fasting, especially when done over the course of decades, can have positive effects on metabolic and cardiovascular health. Now, a new study finds that it may also add an extra layer of protection from heart-related COVID-19 complications in people who had already sought cardiac care.

"We already know that regular fasting over long periods of time can lead to overall health improvements. Here we found that it may also lead to better outcomes in COVID-19 patients who required a cardiac catheterization," said Benjamin Horne, Ph.D. "Fasting won't necessarily stop a cardiac event from happening, but it may prevent someone from developing heart failure after."

Researchers found that those who practiced regular fasting had a lower rate of heart failure-related hospitalization, complications, and death than COVID-19 positive patients in the study who did not fast.

"These results show that long-term, low-frequency fasting can help prevent heart failure, even in patients who have both COVID-19 and heart problems already," Dr. Horne said.

Nearly 62 percent of Utah's population belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members typically fast the first Sunday of the month by going without food or drink for two consecutive meals.

Dr. Horne said that more research is needed to understand why intermittent fasting is associated with better COVID-19 outcomes in patients already being treated for heart conditions.

For example, fasting reduces inflammation, especially since hyperinflammation is associated with poor COVID-19 outcomes. In addition, after 12 to 14 hours of fasting, the body switches from using glucose in the blood to ketones, which can improve heart function.

Another potential benefit is that intermittent fasting promotes autophagy, which is "the body's recycling system that helps your body destroy and recycle damaged and infected cells," he said.

I’m a big proponent of fasting. Amazing how inflammation reduces.

Fasting from 3-7 days activates the body’s autophagy system to remove damaged cells and regenerate with new ones. (5 days seems to be a sweet spot for general purposes with 7 days better for neurological regeneration) Autophagy down regulates inflammation from covid spike proteins and catabolizes residual spike proteins , fibroid tissues, clots mRNA and other consequences ofnthe vax shots from the body and then metabolizes them as fuel. Once the fast is stopped, the body regenerates the affected areas. One important thing is that the fasting be done in multiple repeated cycles with a suitable (usually 4 -8) week break to allow for regeneration

I fasted through both my bouts with COVID. Fasting is known to ramp up the immune system. Feed a cold starve a fever.

You are welcome. I have been doing 5-7 day fasts and a nominal 6 week cycle and can verify that it really works . Google autophagy, fasting and Longo for more info

Certain Middle Eastern cultures eat one large meal a day.

Would that be considered fasting?

Do you use a “kit” for your fasts? (I think Longo has one)

No, just do it the old fashion way - stop eating and only. drink water or coffee

Dr Longo’s fasting mimicking diet is better for people with difficulties doing a water fast due to health or inclination difficulties with a water fast.

Do a day or so of his fasting mimicking diet for a day or so after the fast to get re acclimatized to eating According to Longo, the fasting mimicking diet is just as effective

I have a terrible time fasting...my brain goes into starvation panic overload and food becomes its major focus. I am thinking of doing 500-800 calories for 5 days which is what Longos program is...and that way my brain relaxes a bit.
