Gov. Rick Perry of Texas Is Indicted on Charge of Abuse of Power (2014)

AUSTIN, Tex. — A grand jury indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two felony counts on Friday, charging that he abused his power last year when he tried to pressure the district attorney here, a Democrat, to step down by threatening to cut off state financing to her office.

The indictment left Mr. Perry, a Republican, the first Texas governor in nearly 100 years to face criminal charges and presented a major roadblock to his presidential ambitions at the very time that he had been showing signs of making a comeback.

Grand jurors in Travis County charged Mr. Perry with abusing his official capacity and coercing a public servant, according to Michael McCrum, the special prosecutor assigned to the case.

The long-simmering case has centered on Mr. Perry’s veto power as governor. His critics asserted that he used that power as leverage to try to get an elected official — Rosemary Lehmberg, the district attorney in Travis County — to step down after her arrest on a drunken-driving charge last year. Ms. Lehmberg is Austin’s top prosecutor and oversees a powerful public corruption unit that investigates state, local and federal officials; its work led to the 2005 indictment of a former Republican congressman, Tom DeLay, on charges of violating campaign finance laws.

Just a reminder that Democrats have used local prosecutors to target and take down GOP presidential candidates before. Perry was probably on the way out of the race anyway, but this indictment all but ended the campaign. It took two years before the last charges were finally thrown out of court.

It helps when 90% of all lawyers are Democrats.

Mike McCrum’s a law school classmate and a friend. I was very disappointed when he agreed to accept the special prosecutor appointment in this case.

So?

If you are trying to apply this to President Trump in the vain hopes that this will somehow knock him out of 2024, you have another thought coming!

President Trump has DEFIANTLY made it clear this will have nothing to do and no impact on his campaign for POTUS 2024!

“Ironically both Perry and Trump have done nothing wrong.”

Who says we haven’t become a 3rd world country? Open your eyes, any republican, and/or conservative is fair game to totally ruin.

Ironically both Perry and Trump have done nothing wrong.

Ironically, both are also ex-Democrats.

In Perry’s case he had a fellow A&M graduate named Tony Buzbee come in and organize the legal team that represented Rick Perry. The attorney’s name is Tony Buzbee (former Democrat). Tony is in a class by himself when it comes to lawyering and he mopped the floor with the Austin Democrats who went after Perry.

Tony Buzbee would later run for mayor of Houston but was “beaten” by the best Democratic ballot harvesting, ballot stuffing, ballot fraud organization in the country. It’s run by Rodney Ellis and the next person who will be running for Houston mayor - Shelia Jackson-Lee. Jackson-Lee will probably win because her gang has been doing voter fraud in Houston for decades. IMO, her methods are the ones used in the last presidential election and why Trump had the election stolen from him.

Rick Perry? I never really liked him much until I met him in person. He has an interesting “talent” and one that’s kind of ironic given that he forgot who the DOE was in a debate. The “talent” he has is that he remembers the name and face of everyone he has ever met. It’s kind of spooky along the lines that Ted Cruze remembers what he hears.

Both political parties and the Washington infrastructure have been strip mining America for decades. The simple reason they hate Trump is that he might stop some of that. Since they don’t care about this country and only care about sucking out fake cash leveraged by loans while having $50 trillion of debt they can’t have Trump stopping the gravy train.

The real irony here is that outright criminals are going after Trump for possibly doing something that on its face is not illegal.

This was a tradition in Travis County. Prior to Rick Perry there was Ronnie Earle's indictment of Tom Delay.

Did y'all hear Ronnie Earle died of COVID? I laughed when I heard that; hope it was painful.

This is why I have been saying the GOP needs to do this as well. WE can’t win if only one side is willing to do this.

It’s why the democrats hate them because they can’t meet the same standards.

If you can’t lie cheat steal or screw something up your not a democrat.

Remember the mugshot?

Even the Republicans who didn't care much for Perry thought he handled that well.

IIRC, the 2014 indictment was Rosemary Lehmberg's revenge for Perry cutting her department's funding. Remember that drunk cow, strapped to a chair after her DUI arrest, head covered with a sack to keep her from spitting at the cops? Not a great look for a county District Attorney, even less so when it's the state capitol.

I’m all for conservatives committing “crimes” if that’s what it takes to keep the Dung Beetle Party in check.
