Vegan activist Joaquin Phoenix gets back in the saddle for Napoleon - five years after sharing his 'regret' at riding horses for movie roles
Daily Mail ^ | 7 April 2023 | ALISON BOSHOFF

Ardent vegan activist Joaquin Phoenix finds himself uncomfortably on horseback in the new Napoleon film by British director Ridley Scott.

Indeed, you can see in Phoenix's face just how much he enjoys it.. the answer being, not a lot.

Phoenix will have found himself horribly conflicted when forced to get back in the saddle.

He has been vegan since the age of three and believes that using any animal products β€” or using animals full stop β€” is a 'gross abuse of power'.

In 2018 he talked about having to ride horses in The Sisters Brothers β€” and how he regretted it.

'I didn't really think about it until I was there and realised: "Oh, it's a western and we're on horses a lot."

'I felt bad about riding them. I had the feeling that they were like, "I don't really want you on my back."

When somebody suggested the experience might be mutually enjoyable for rider and mount, Phoenix said: 'Yeah, but the horses tell you something different.'

The Apple TV+ movie will get a cinema release in November. British actress Vanessa Kirby co-stars as 'not tonight' Josephine.

In 2020 Phoenix took to the streets of London in a bid to urge Londoners to embrace a vegan lifestyle as he protested on behalf of animal rights.

The screen star, who just hours later would scooped the coveted Leading Actor trophy at the EE British Academy Film Awards, also tied himself to the city landmark Tower Bridge as he joined forces with activist group Animal Equality.

Showing his commitment to the cause, the Hollywood actor joined fellow protesters as they unfurled a huge 390 square-foot banner over the bridge, which read: 'Factory farming is destroying our planet. Go vegan.'

Read the last night of River Phoenix's life. He was on a date, was such a radical vegan he ran out of a restaurant crying when his date ordered a meat entree. She apparently paid the bill before any of the food arrived and left finding him pacing around on the street outside. Then they went to Johnny Depp's club where River was meeting up with his drug dealer who shot him up with an overdose of heroin or such. Pathetic.

Where does he get his vegan food that doesn’t use “factory farming”? Does he grow his own? Or does he use those big paychecks to buy from an boutique organic farm?

I’m glad Maximus put an end to Joaquin at the end of “Gladiator”.

I remember 55 years ago when come company made a saddle made of plastic. I think it was PENNEYS when they sold through a catalog.

About that time there also came out a C&W song on the raido about saddles(but really was not about saddles)

“Don’t give me no plastic saddle,
Let me feel that leather when I ride.
Don’t give me no paint and powder,
Honey let me feel new hide....”

I thought he was born Leaf Phoenix and took the name Joaquin, but you are right. His parents named him Joaquin, but since his brothers and sisters had such strange names (River, Rain, Summer, Liberty) he called himself Leaf at one time to fit in with them. The father’s original last name was “Bottom.” I wonder if Joaquin’s late brother River Phoenix was ever “River Bottom.”

LOL! Reminds me of what Jack Parr said in his book I KID YOU NOT about Hollywood.

“There was one Cowboy actor in Hollywood who is so gay the producers have to keep him from riding in on a sidesaddle!”

A sellout just like this guy:

Jesse Wilson : This is bull s___.

Bobby Taylor : What are you talking about?

Jesse Wilson : This is some more of the white man's stereotype of a black man, yeah, brother.

Bobby Taylor : Really?

Jesse Wilson : Yeah, brother. Only an Uncle Tom would do this s___. They just lookin' for somebody to sell out.

Bobby Taylor : Sell out?

Jesse Wilson : The only role they gonna let us do is a slave, a butler, or some street hood or something. Don't sell out, brother. Don't be a butler or a slave.

Receptionist : Jesse Wilson? Jesse Wilson, you're next.

Jesse Wilson : *all excited* That's me! Good luck, brotha.
