Yes, after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was signed, they became what Edward G. Robinson called "Communinazis." Including Woody Guthrie. Lillian Hellman was kicked out of the Communist Party, because she wrote Watch on the Rhine. Communist protests against the "fascist FDTR." Of course that all changed once Hitler invaded the Soviet Union.

Actually, it took a week or two. Stalin isolated himself after the invasion in depression. Since he micromanaged the U.S. communist party, they couldn't change their beliefs until he directed.
