Almost everyone in the U.S. was isolationist in the 30s. Americans were sick of war profiteers. Read War is a Racket by General Smedley Butler. It was only over years of being inundated by pro-war propaganda by FDR that the people of the U.S. changed.

I think that changed when France fell, and it started to look like the Nazis were going to gang up with the Japs. The biggest issue was with what would happen with all those French colonies, especially Indochina; if the Japs got those, that would change everything.

At the very least, Americans realized they’d better start preparing to go to war.
