Dramatic video shows a Russian soldier being shot at by his own side as he tries to surrender to a drone, Ukrainian official says

• Dramatic video footage shows a Russian soldier’s surrender to a Ukrainian drone, Ukraine said.
• A Ukrainian official told Insider that he was targeted by his own side as he ran.
• Explosions can be seen going off around the soldier as he scrambles towards captivity.

A Russian soldier seen surrendering to a Ukrainian drone in dramatic footage in Bakhmut was fired on by his own men as he made his dash to captivity, according to a Ukrainian official.

In striking drone footage that has circulated widely online, a soldier can be seen making his way through explosions and trenches across ruined ground before approaching a dugout with his hands raised.

Vitaliy Matvienko, the spokesperson for Ukraine’s “I Want to Live” surrender hotline, confirmed to Insider that the footage was taken by the Code 9.2 unit of Ukraine’s 92nd Mechanized Brigade near Bakhmut, and said that it showed a Russian soldier surrendering to them.

The soldier, from the Pskov region in western Russia, is safe in captivity as a prisoner of war, Matvienko said.
Two edited versions of the footage have circulated online, one of which shows the explosions, and one which appears to be filmed by a second drone.

A longer video of the Russian surrendering to a Ukrainian drone

The “I Want to Live” hotline, which claims to receive thousands of calls a month, is an official project of Ukraine allowing Russian soldiers to pre-arrange to surrender once on Ukrainian territory.
But it has also released instructions on how active duty soldiers can surrender to a drone — a phenomenon that appears to have taken place several times in this conflict.

In this instance, Matvienko said the surrender was not pre-arranged through the hotline but took place spontaneously, with the 92nd Brigade’s drone operator recognizing that the soldier was trying to signal.

In the footage, the soldier can be seen making various signals to the drone indicating he doesn’t want to fight, Matvienko said. At one stage he makes a pleading motion, while at another, it looks like he is offering to tear the insignia from his shoulder.

The drone drops him a package containing a note which, per Matvienko, tells him to surrender and to follow it.
But the soldier points to himself and shakes his head, making a slicing motion across his neck — seemingly to say that he would be killed if he fled.

Nonetheless, he appears to opt to follow the drone, being led through a warren of trenches, past apparently dead bodies and over wreck-strewn open ground.

Twice, as he scrambles between abandoned vehicles, explosions go off nearby.

“At that time, his comrades-in-arms began to fire at him from the Russian positions, but he was not hit,” said Matvienko.

Eventually, as the soldier approaches a dugout, he removes his helmet and puts his hands in the air, before being received by another soldier.

The encounter, Matvienko said, is one example of how “Ukrainian soldiers find such creative ways to defeat Russians on the battlefield.”

Ukrainian military drone leads woman to safety amidst enemy fire
euromaidanpress Article by: Christine Chraibi
https://euromaidanpress.com/2023/04/07/ukrainian-military-drone-leads-woman-to-safety-amidst-enemy-fire/

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), aka as drones, has transformed modern warfare in a number of ways, namely by contributing to a greater level of situational awareness, greater precision and accuracy in targeting, and less risk to military personnel. Ukraine has been quite successful with drones, destroying Russian cruise missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and targets behind enemy lines and inside Russia’s borders. In addition, the Ukrainian military has shown flair and ingenuity by adapting and using drones in extreme rescue situations.

This is a powerful story of a rescue operation with a Ukrainian drone that makes your blood run cold and yet shows the courage and resilience of Ukrainian civilians and military in the face of danger. The events occurred in Izium Raion, Kharkiv Oblast in June 2022.

Valeriia Ponomarova and her husband Andrii Bohomaz set out to Bakhmut to help their elderly parents leave the city, which was under constant enemy attacks. But, they took a wrong turn and ended up near the frontline where Russian troops had taken up their positions. Suddenly, the Russians opened fire and targeted their vehicle; they came under heavy enemy fire. The footage captured by Ukrainian soldiers monitoring the situation with a drone shows the couple trying to escape but repeatedly coming under fire.

The Russian IFV targeted and hit the couple’s vehicle; Andrii was seriously injured, and Valeriia frantically tried to stop the bleeding.

But in the midst of this chaos and danger, a glimmer of hope shone through. The Ukrainian soldiers stationed nearby decided to take a risk and help evacuate the couple. They charged the drone and attached a sign reading “Follow me”, hoping that Valeriia would react and follow the route to safety. And that’s exactly what she did. She hurriedly left the scene of the shooting and followed the Ukrainian drone.
Soon after, a group of Russian soldiers approached the couple’s bullet-riddled car, picked up wounded and unconscious Andrii and threw him into a ditch

Despite fear and uncertainty, Valeriia continued to follow the drone, knowing that it was the only way to get help for her injured husband. Meanwhile, after a harrowing night spent in the trench, Andrii woke up in the rain and mud, and summoned the strength to walk to the Ukrainian positions. There, he received first aid, and medics tended to his wounds.

But the story doesn’t end there.

Following the liberation of the region in September 2022, the Kharkiv Regional Police Department initiated a pre-trial investigation under Part 1 of Article 438 (violation of the laws and customs of war) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigators subsequently examined the scene and confiscated all the material evidence and investigative information. Additionally, the investigation team identified the location of the infantry fighting vehicle, which had fired at the car, found ten shell casings from large-calibre weapons and took them into custody. They interviewed the victims and witnesses of the incident, and added all collected evidence to the ongoing criminal proceedings. Forensic examinations were also conducted.

During operational and search activities conducted with the assistance of the Kharkiv cyber police, the investigation team identified the Russian soldier responsible for the attack as Klim Dmitrievich Kerzhaiev, a 26-year-old senior lieutenant from Moscow. He serves as commander of the Motorized Rifle Company of the Russian Armed Forces, part of the 1st Tank Army in the Western Military District of the Russian Federation.

According to Serhii Bolvinov, head of the Kharkiv police investigation department, the investigation included evidence collected by cyber police, who monitored the Russian officer’s social media accounts and phone calls, in addition to drone recordings. During one of his conversations, he informed his wife that he “had killed a man today” by firing at a vehicle with his Soviet-era BMP. A day later, he called a friend and confessed to the murder, adding that he did not care about it.

The Ukrainian National Police has collected irrefutable evidence of the Russian officer’s guilt. The offender was served with a notice of suspicion in absentia for committing a crime under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine
There are many similar stories in today’s war-torn Ukraine, stories of bravery, ingenuity, and the triumph of good over evil. It reminds us that even in the darkest of times, there are still heroes among us, willing to risk their lives to help others. They are the ones who inspire us to be better, to do better, and to strive for a better tomorrow.

“The ‘I Want to Live’ hotline”

I believe the Ukrainian motivation for ‘I Want to Live’ hotline began at the beginning of the invasion. Ukrainian soldiers felt badly like they were playing a video game when waves & waves of Russian soldiers were sent as cannon fodder into the ‘meat grinder’.

Especially the conscripts that had been trapped & lied to regarding the invasion. On the first day of the spring 2022 conscription, which runs from April 1 to July 15, a government-issued disclaimer appeared in Russian news articles, offering families information on the nature of service: “Conscription events are not related to the special operation in Ukraine.”

The articles included a message of reassurance from Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu: “I would like to emphasize that conscripts will not be sent to any hot spots” – a euphemism for the war in Ukraine.

The ‘I Want to Live’ hotline saves lives.

“There are certain elements that are crucial for success in a war. Some of them are the equipment and munitions that the army has, or the number and experience of the military personnel in the army, but there is one thing that is more important than all of them, and it is powerful enough to change the course of a war completely.

And that is the motivation of the soldiers in the army! An army of soldiers who feel good, especially psychologically, who feel supported and who know exactly why they are fighting will always be much stronger. We see a lot of evidence of this in the Ukrainian and Russian armies. The biggest secret of the success of Ukrainian soldiers, in particular, is that they know why they are fighting. Confident in their motivation, Ukrainian soldiers are fighting hard to liberate their land from enemy hands and gain their independence!

The Russian army seems to have no chance against the Ukrainian army, which has become much stronger with the support of the people. Because the situation of the soldiers in the Russian army is really bad.

Forced to fight on the front lines, Russian soldiers do not know why they are on the front lines or even who they are fighting! This situation causes the Russian soldiers to lose their motivation and not to succeed in the war.

From the very beginning of the occupation, videos have emerged showing that Russian soldiers do not want to go to the front line, and the striking statements of Russian soldiers who somehow managed to escape from the front line are on the agenda!

In fact, a soldier from the 504th Tank Regiment of the Russian army who surrendered to the Ukrainian army made the following statement: “We don’t know who our commander is and which unit we belong to.” This statement revealed the utter helplessness of the Russian army.

The vast majority of the Russian army did not even know why they were at the front! Russian soldiers are in great rebellion and do not want to be at the front! Because despite the extraordinary losses they have suffered, they know only one thing: they are being forced to fight for Putin’s political interests!

Worse than being out of ammo the last six months? Didn’t you also report that Wagner was leaving the Ukraine area en route to Africa a week or so after you let us know they were out of ammo? More lying disinfo, just like all of your lying disinfo. I repeat the challenge to you, show us ONE instance where any of your breathless reporting amounted to anything more than BS disinfo.
