The original song was written by Australian country singer Geoff Mack in 1959.

The song was presented to Hank Snow. Initially, the song was declined because the lyric locations were Aussie towns and cities. They didn’t think it would work in Nashville, so the Aussie names were changed to US towns and cities.

Several artists have recorded the Americanized version.

Now THAT I did not know! Thank you for the musical history lesson.

I know all previous generations said the same thing when it comes to the next generation’s music preferences. However, you have to admit, the vulgar rap we hear today has no musical notes whatsoever, few actually play musical instruments, and there is nothing in the lyrics that can be called poetry or musical at all. Lyrics are supposed to be made of actual words, not by grunts and vulgarities.

(Just my old-age opinion).

Give me southern rock with the Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band, are even the flute playing contributions of Jethro Tull. Or, give me old country music with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Charlie Pride, and Patsy Cline! I also love bluegrass with Tony Rice, Bill Munroe, etc, and the smooth sounds of Allison Krause.

I’d even prefer the Big Band sounds of the 40s and 50s.

There are so many better sounds from musicians and bands from decades ago than what we hear as the “top” music of today. There is a reason that there are radio stations with the top 60s 70s and 80s tunes. That music is listened to and sells advertising even to this day.

[Gosh, I feel old! LOL!]
