The only error with Liz Taylor as Cleopatra is that the original Cleo is supposed to have been not good-looking, but had enough other skills to keep adversaries at bay.

She must have had some beauty since she had affairs with both Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony............

Not sure where that came from. She was good looking enough to get both Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony.

Opera star Maria Callas may have been closer to the mark. Small stature, Greek, with a large nose as a defining facial feature. Extreme intelligence and the legendary wealth of Ptolemaic Egypt were attraction enough for at least two Romans. But she sure as Hell wasn't black. Not even truly Egyptian.

Even today you'll see people on the streets of Cairo with features unlike most Arabs, much less sub-Saharan Africans. People who look like they walked out of a tomb fresco and put on modern clothing. And like actors Omar Sherif and Rami Malek, likely as not Coptic Christians.

**** but had enough other skills to keep adversaries at bay.***

Her other skills....WOW! If I mentioned them on FB I might get 30 days in FB jail whereas Free Republic would just have the moderator remove them.

She was known amongst the Roman Senate as “The Gaper”.

I think one of the best portrayals of Cleopatra was done by the actress Lyndsey Marshal in HBO’s Rome.

Q: What do Greek women put behind their ears to make themselves more attractive to men?

A: Their feet.

She was plain looking. But she had a great mind and was politically smart. Also she came from a power family of the 1st century BCE. Powerful men were drawn to her, because she was someone you could rule the world with. As a side, the oldest painting of her shows her with red hair.
