NATO Chief Urges Kosovo to Ease Tensions With Serbia

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg called on Kosovo to tone down tensions with Serbia on Sunday, two days after clashes between Kosovan police and protesters who are opposed to Albanian mayors taking office in ethnic Serbian areas.

Stoltenberg, the transatlantic military alliance's Norwegian secretary-general, said he had spoken to European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell about Kosovo and that Pristina and Belgrade must engage in the EU-led dialog.

"Pristina must de-escalate & not take unilateral, destabilizing steps," Stoltenberg said in a tweet.

Serbs, who form the majority of the population in Kosovo's northern region, do not accept its 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia and still see Belgrade as their capital more than two decades after the war ended in 1999.

Ethnic Albanians make up more than 90% of the population in Kosovo as a whole.

Indeed it is! Pristina was known for its many churches, not mosques!

Kosovo is Serbia.

When muslims in Britain, Ireland, and France declare independence, will we all be expected to recognize that independence?

NATO would never have dreamed making this statement two years ago. What happened? What changed?

Incident at Pristina airport

NATO Secretary-General.[3] Clark ordered Blunt to “overpower” and “destroy” the Russians, but Blunt refused to obey the order and questioned what Clark meant.[6] Jackson refused to enforce Clark’s orders, reportedly telling him “I’m not going to start the Third World War for you

The dip wad in the white hut, probably had an influence on it.

Probably.

The Irish appear to have given up. Whoever claims it, gets it. The English and French will probably put up more of a fight. They won't recognize muslim independence in their countries and neither will the United States.

After nearly a quarter century of babysitting Kosovo and putting up with the antics of the KLA, Mama NATO’s getting a headache. And Kurti has got way too big for his britches.

Not so long ago in Kosovo:

It’s not that simple.

Neither is it a simple religious difference. It is religion merged with ethnic differences.

Kosovo was probably “Albanian” tribes during the Roman and pre-Roman period (until the 6th century). It was then Slavic owned (and probably slowly Slavicized) from the 6th century to the 14th century.

It was part of the state of Serbia for centuries before the 14th century.

It’s demographics changed - both ethnically and religiously from the 14th century.

After the re-establishment of the Serbian state in the 1800s it was still demographically majority Albanian and majority Muslim (including Muslim Serbs) even as part of the Serbian and then the Yugoslavian state.

I would note that in Albania proper you have Mulims, Orthodox Christians, Catholic Christians living peacefully together. And in Bulgaria you have Orthodox Christians and Muslim Bulgarians (Pomaks) living together.

It could have worked in Kosovo if
1. The “ethnicity” or the “religion” was the same — I’ll note that most Kosovar Muslims are Sufi,
2. The Serbs were not trying ethnic cleansing - if they had just instead using “ethnic pressure”, then the population would have changed gradually.

What can be done now?

I think the blood is too bad after killings on both sides to have a unitary state.

Splitting it in two would be the “logical” option, but won’t work as many Serbian historically significant places are in Albanian hands.

Ethnically cleansing it one way or the other is also impossible even if one could stomach the morality of it.

Perhaps a solution wherein Kosovo is a “Sud-Tirol” state would work?

A perfect explanation of European stupidity that will always keep them a petty and unaccomplished people. They all have gripes and complaints from 1500 years ago. And they all boil down to “they are different”.

America was the place that left that behind. A curse on those who try to drag America into those idiotic meaningless old world feuds.

A perfect explanation of European stupidity that will always keep them a petty and unaccomplished people.

well, firstly "European" is a very blanket term, putting tons of people in the same bucket - and it fails. You can't even use the term "Slavic" as Russians, Poles, Bulgarians, Serbs, etc. have different histories and "successes" - heck even among the South Slavs, there are differing "successes"

Secondly, you think "Europeans" have been unaccomplished?

Thirdly - the "gripes from 1500 years ago" is normal in humanity - even the USA has gripes over the Civil war, it is the normal human condition.

What is wrong isfor the Croats, Serbs, Russians etc. is keeping that grudges violent --> in contrast Poles have forgiven the Ukrainian massacres in Wolyn while the English and French have forgiven that they have been at war for 900 years etc. etc.

The USA needs to get involved when it can explode into war that sucks the USA in as it hits the American economy - as in the case of Russia's invasion of Ukraine -- when Russia just took Crimea it was no reason for the USA to get militarily involved
