Those in the Northeast had a very weird sunrise this morning in that you could look right at the sun for over an hour after sunrise without hurting your eyes. As I was driving to my train station this morning in Westport, CT, I opened my windows and I could actually smell the smoke.
The cause was the wildfires in Canada that caused the sky to have an eerie, milky appearance for most of the day.
It was even noticeable in New York City. Coming home tonight, it seemed like a partial eclipse of the sun driving home. It's very dark and eerie out there.
Definitely smoke from a distant fire.
We have it here in the Chicago area too, but not quite that bad.
Smoke from wildfires can travel thousands of miles.
Isn’t Los Angeles also affected by these Canadian fires?
It really felt as if there was an eclipse. Everything had a weird shade of yellow orange. Smoke smell everywhere.
Now I hear thunder.
Smells like winter and my neighbor has a fire in the fireplace. Nice smell. But the haze has been pretty impressive.
IIRC about a third of California’s air pollution is blown over from China.
Factories, coal plants, forest fires all contribute.
But only legal Americans are impacted.
NNJ is smoke covered in the valleys. 5 PM looked like 8 PM. My sensors had the outdoor lights on by 6PM. The smoke is thick and the smell is strong like burning pine. Very strange and unsettling..
