The thing about this scene is they were mocking the excesses of radicals. All the people arguing against the “tranny” were revolutionary communist types, and the tranny was as well. Their stock in trade was tearing down social norms and constructs, but this was a bridge too far, because they all (except the tranny) realized that there must be an end to deconstruction; some things just can’t be changed, so there is no point in trying.
Back then, all the lefties got the point, they got the joke, and they laughed at the silly tranny.
But now the leftie radicals have power. And they’ve become mad with that power and forgotten the lesson completely. They no longer see any limits to what they can achieve with destruction. So the joke’s not funny to them, because they are now the butt of it.
