I Forced my Teen Daughter to Gut a Fish to Learn a ‘Life Skill’ — Now my Family Is Angry
New York Post ^ | June 8, 2023 | Allie Griffin

A father forced his grossed-out young daughter to gut a fish he bought at the store to teach her a “life skill” — and he’s now asking strangers on the internet if it was wrong to do so after his wife grew angry at him.

The 38-year-old dad of two girls, 13 and 10, posted in the popular Reddit group “Am I the A–hole” to ask that exact question after teaching his older daughter to debone and descale a fish against her will.

Fair_Moose_4755 explained that he and his wife have been teaching their girls a variety of “life skills such as cooking, cleaning and car maintenance” and recently the family went on a camping trip. His oldest daughter learned to make the fire, pitch the tent and go fishing, he wrote.

I think the father did the right thing, except they should have caught the fish.

My 12 year old went out to the range and shot my AR-15 and 9mm, which we then lost while we were canoeing.

She really enjoyed it.

My dad taught me all sorts of “life skills” that I had no interest in learning and some that were a bit disgusting to me (like how to replace a toilet, first scraping up all the encrusted remnants of the old wax sealant ring... that was fun). Nobody every said he was the “a hole” or sympathized with my plight.

Suck it up. Life only gets harder when you’re on your own and have to do every dirty job yourself.

"..and he’s now asking strangers on the internet if it was wrong to do so.."

It was wrong, because even dead fish have rights.

the differences between fathers and mothers...

teach them to survive when you are gone... not to rely on you while you are here...

catch the fish, gut the fish, start a fire, cook the fish...

survive.

My daughters helped butcher deer as soon as they were capable. Nothing strange after seeing deer hanging in the garage for years before that. Butchering was a family chore, as well as grinding meat, making sausages and jerky. My eldest daughter’s favorite meal was a venison rump roast that I would make on Christmas Eve. Each year she would ask, “are we having deer butt for Christmas Eve dinner?”

Why would any rational parent force a child to gut a fish if that clearly upset or grossed out the child?

Wait a year. Wait two years. Let them grow into it.

Unless the parent believes that civil society is going to collapse tomorrow, what difference does it make?

None!

dead fish have rights.

Correct, they have the right to be eaten. That’s coming from a founding member of PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals)

Agreed. Starting at about that age, I helped with cleaning the fish from family outings. It’s a good age to learn such skills.

She did learn a life skill - how to be the next Bryan Kohberger. 35-to-life, probably.

She was thirteen. I was scaling and gutting fish.... not sure my exact age but considering where I did it I could not have been over seven. I never enjoyed it but I know how to do it. At thirteen you should be gutting game.

And no dad, you are not a jerk. You wife needs to get off the fainting couch and cook some fish.

(Rules of the Bear Household, You catch and clean it and I will cook it.)

Because letting a child out of something just because it upsets them is the wrong life lesson.

When I was in my teens I had to clean a gas station restroom nightly. It upset me and it was gross. I still had to do it or I would not get paid. If I did not get paid I would be sleeping under a bridge and fishing for my supper.

So I cleaned the restroom.

That is the way life is.

I saw someone gut a fish when I was about that age, and I’ve never eaten seafood since.

(But I’m sure I would feel likewise if I ever went to a slaughterhouse.)

I think you’re right. There are plenty of ‘life skills’ we can teach children until they’re ready to take on others.

Underneath the bridge
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I’ve trapped
Have all become my pets
And I’m living off of grass
And the drippings from the ceiling
It’s okay to eat fish
’cause they don’t have any feelings
