Key West real estate mogul charged with shooting man for peeing on wall faces new murder rap

A Key West businessman has been indicted on first-degree murder and other charges in the fatal shooting of a high school football coach’s son after the young man relieved himself on a wall outside a bar.

Lloyd Brewer III, 57, previously faced a top charge of second-degree murder for opening fire on 21-year-old Garrett Daniel Hughes on Feb. 13 in front of the young man’s brother outside Conch Town Liquor & Lounge.

Brewer owns the strip mall that houses the bar on North Roosevelt Boulevard in the New Town neighborhood.

An attorney for the victim’s family told Fox News Digital that Hughes urinated on the wall of a building that wasn’t even owned by Brewer.

“This is a violent murder that has left the family devastated and, frankly, the city of Key West as well,” said Stuart Grossman, who is suing Brewer for wrongful death on behalf of the Hughes family. “Garrett was well-known for his athletic skills and personality in Key West.”

Sounds like people are getting fed-up and are taking matters into their own hands. A few years ago the shooter would have called the PD and the guy would have been arrested, but now he knew nothing would be done. I see this as a future trend not just a local story.

You make an excellent point, and you’re probably right.

of a high school football coach’s son ... Garrett was well-known for his athletic skills and personality in Key West.”

so the young man's life is defined by his daddy being a coach and him playing high school ball at least 3 years ago. I'm not disparaging the dead, I'm disparaging the reporting.

Just a bit of an overreaction to nothing more than public urination wouldn’t you say?

BTW, the article goes on to say the building the guy urinated on wasn’t even owned by the shooter.

Very sad all the way around.

He was 21 years old. He didn’t have a lot of time to make a name for himself.

I agree, the writing sucks in general and does a very poor job of explaining the situation clearly.

The guy went out of his way to kill someone.

“Shortly after midnight, Garrett Hughes was recorded on grainy surveillance video walking out of the bar shirtless toward the wall of another building.
Brewer can be seen reaching into his waistband and walking across the parking lot directly toward Hughes as the young man faces a wall and relieves himself, prosecutors wrote in court papers.
As Brewer advanced, he pointed his gun at Hughes, who was unarmed, according to prosecutors.”

The reporter says that Brewer owns the building

The family’s attorney stated that he did not.

Guessing that the family’s attorney would get the facts straight but who knows.

Apparently in Hawaii he wouldn’t have even had the snow in his last few seconds to write his name.

Both men were reported as being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the shooting.

Peeing on a wall outside a bar? It is very common in many advanced countries.

What surprises me is that victims’ relatives haven’t started attacking the Soros liberal DAs that release criminals that have killed someone and on the other hand charge someone that uses deadly force to protect themselves or someone else with murder.

I think we can assume that he was drunk. This is yet another example of why I'm damn happy that I decided early on to never touch alcohol. Having worked in a big city ER I can guarantee that 90% of the assaults and murders we saw involved alcohol in one way or another. And then there's drunk driving...

As I recall, there weren’t enough bathrooms in KW bars, at least not during peak times. I watered a few walls on Duval Street. I remember the Euphorbia that grows between buildings and the sidewalk.

These days, the bathrooms are probably full of queers doing who-knows-what.

Any idea how KW goes about providing a sewage system? I wouldn’t think it would be easy.

You are correct- I did not mean to defend this foolish act. I simply meant people have lost all faith in ‘the law’ to bring us justice. I think we’ll see more and more overreactions, such as this.

Anyone that’s ever been to KW knows there are bars everywhere....ith thst many people consuming alcohol I would imagine public urination is a very common occurrence.......certainly no reason to shoot someone.
