Fatal Bear Attack in Arizona Stopped with a Rifle

On June 16, near Groom Creek, in Arizona, 66-year-old Steven Jackson was sitting on his camp chair, having coffee at an outdoor table, when a 300 lb male black bear attacked him. The attack appears to have been unprovoked and predatory in nature. Groom Creek is a few miles South of Prescott, about 100 miles north of Phoenix, at about 5000 – 6000  feet above sea level. The temperature on the morning of the 16th was 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  From Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office:

At approximately 7:50 this morning, the YCSO dispatch center received multiple 911 calls about a man who was being mauled by a bear in the Groom Creek Area. When YCSO deputies and Prescott PD arrived at the scene, which was in a heavily wooded remote area, they found Steven Jackson, 66 years old of Tucson dead of an apparent bear attack, and the bear dead nearby. Deputies called officials from Arizona Game and Fish to respond to the scene as well.

From multiple witness accounts and preliminary investigation of the scene, Mr. Jackson had been sitting having coffee at a table on his property where he was building a home. It appears that a male black bear attacked Mr. Jackson, taking him unaware, and dragged him approximately 75 feet down an embankment.

Neighbors who heard the victim screaming tried to intervene through shouts and car horns, but the bear did not let go of Mr. Jackson until one neighbor was able to retrieve his rifle and shoot the bear to get him to disengage. Unfortunately, by that time Mr. Jackson has succumbed to his horrible injuries.

Bears have been very active in the Bradshaw Mountains this month.

So far an adult bear was located at the Prescott Valley Safeway on June 4, one sitting on a patio on Spruce Mountain, an adult spotted at Goldwater Lake this week, and a cub checking a patio yesterday. All caught on camera. Also unconfirmed sightings in the Eastridge and Prescott Country Club neighborhoods.

My friend spotted a bear near Embry Riddle University earlier this year.

In addition a group of four mountain lions were roaming the Prescott neighborhoods and killing pets so AZFG located and killed all of them.

There have been people living in the Groom Creek area for over 100 years. It is pine country with many summer homes and cabins.

Time to start running some “bear” hounds through that area, like what you see on the Mountain Man series.

Buffalo Bore claims their solid copper out performs their hard cast. But that was in context of their 45/70 Dangerous Game loads. It had to do with no bullet deformation and straight line destroying everything in it’s path.

Have friends we visit every year who live on a mountain in Prescott and he carries a 9mm when he and his wife go for walks. Said there’s lots of bear, mountain lion etc. sightings. On another Prescott thread, they posted a black bear outside the Prescott Valley Safeway. My wife and I were at that Safeway in March just ahead of an 8” snowstorm.

Worked with a lady who was retiring and moving to western Colorado with her family. Their new home was in the mountains and her sons and husband were pushing to purchase guns since they liked to hike. She asked me and I told her I wouldn’t live there without one and certainly not hiking without one. Told her to make sure there was a 4 in the caliber.

Every ammunition manufacturer claims theirs’s is the best.

I load a 460gr cast in my 45-70’s for years because. I make and reload them for about 10 cents each. That’s only 2 dollars a box.

Even at a some what low velocity of 1550fps. They well shoot completely through a 200lb plus hog. In one end out the other.

Now I use 325gr Hornaday flex tips. Why because I was able to buy a couple cases of them really cheap.

They preform really well also.

Having killed and been involved in killing several hundred head of big game.

Modern ammo out of good firearms work very well.

Last I knew Freeper Kanawa is fine, has a farm in New Brunswick Canada, where he enjoys riding his horses and doing a bit of gardening.
