Why was he going to Tempe, specifically? Checking out ASU? I live near the Tempe border, and although it isn’t southside Chicago, if you look for trouble you can find it. Definitely gang activity near Southern Ave.When my son worked for Maricopa County transportation planning around 6-7 years ago, he lived in the apartment complex behind Los Reyes de la Torta on Southern. He eventually moved to NS for a better job and less heat, but it seemed reasonably safe there when I would visit.

Southern Avenue is a long stretch of road. Large parts of it are fine, others, not so much. Same with Van Buren and Indian School Road.
