A United Airlines pilot gave a heartwarming announcement ahead of co-piloting a flight with her mother and fulfilled her lifelong mission.
Brooke Patterson Van Howe held the microphone as she stood at the United Airlines Terminal Gate 76A and told passengers she would be their first officer taking them to Newark this afternoon.
'Today is a very special flight for us probably the most special in my aviation career,' Van Howe said in the announcement from an unknown airport.
Turning towards the smiling woman standing next to her, who is dressed in a matching navy blue pilot's uniform, said: 'You see this is Captain Brenda Patterson...not only is she my role model ...she's my mother.'
'From the first day I took my very first flight lesson it was my dream to fly with my mom and today that dream comes true,' as applause are overheard and the mother and daughter duo pull their luggage across the terminal towards the aircraft.
The touching touching tribute appeared a few days before Mother's Day on Van Howe's TikTok with the headline: 'Like mother like daughter.'
The video shows a series of photos of a young Van Howe with her mom.
'She raised me into the woman I am today and I am super proud to call her my mom,' she said. 'I'm very excited to share the experience with you.'

That’s quite a lovely event. Something many pilots could only dream about, I’m sure those on board gave a hearty round of applause. However, it may have put the passengers at greater ease had the main Pilot waited until landing at their destination before introducing Captain Brenda.
Glad it all worked out!
I hope it didn’t go like every time my wife drives anywhere with her mother.
The woman on the right in costume is waay overdressed
To quote Harry Callahan in Magnum Force: “How fashionable.”
Hope the hydraulics don’t go out.
OMG I don’t care I just want to get safely from one place to another.
Nice looking ladies. I hope they are good pilots.
Which one is going to stop at a gas station to ask directions?
Sorry but I prefer a man in the captain’s seat and one with a calming but authoritative sounding voice. Even better if they were a pilot with military experience. Just makes me ‘feeeeeeeel’ better.
I prefer QUALIFIED people flying the planes that I’m in.
BWAHAHAHA!!
Everybody, look at me! Sheesh@
As long as they are qualified to fly...that is all that matters when they’re in the cockpit.
“The woman on the right in costume is waay overdressed”
Way overdressed.
Send her to my place for proper fashion training.
Wow! Very sweet!
I was a crew member on my airline’s first all female flight crew in 1988. We jokingly changed the name of the cockpit to ‘box office’.
Why would you say that ?
(sorry, I don't know how to spell the actual word)
“Stylish”.
They found the right location.
