A 5-foot alligator sneaked into a Louisiana home in the middle of the night using the doggy door, according to a sheriff’s office.

But the nosy reptile’s fun was over when the resident dog alerted homeowners to its presence.

Photos shared by the sheriff’s office show the alligator looking quite pleased with itself as it lays near a carpet in the home. Video shows an official with a long pole stealthily creeping toward the alligator from around a corner. The official then secures a loop around the alligator’s neck and subdues it as it thrashes wildly.

The alligator was relocated, according to the sheriff’s office.

Gators have a great sense of smell, and climb chain linked fences with ease. Always assume there is a gator in every body of water in the south. Don’t try to fish for gators by letting your dog get near a body of water.

The stuff of nighmares. Lots of stories about raccoons entering through doggy doors. Now we know a small reptilian brain can do it too.

How safe is the pup with gators in its yard?

Don’t try to fish for gators by letting your dog get near a body of water.

In Florida this year, two seasoned citizens became gator food within a week for walking near ponds with their pups.

Not safe if gator has easy access to the yard.

Correct, anybody who walks their dog near the water or lets it enter the water in such areas hate their pet and wants it to die.

The dogs survived. The elderly dog owners became gator food.

Bears to the north, gators to the south, it’s an army of paw soldiers chasing us into our 15-minute cities!

Have seen videos of deer and even a cougar who used a pet door to get in. My dog will have to wait for me, not interested in unwelcome house-guests.

As a kid in South Florida I spent many a happy hour in the ‘Glades. Never saw a gator. Poachers took care of that. Now, with the Gummn’t involved they’re all over the place.

Good morning.

IMHO an every day event in the Sunshine state.

Had a 4ft in the pool one time about 15 years ago, but I didn’t post to FR thinking all the FL posters would say, “so what?”

Folks aren’t as discerning today as they were years ago. Doggy doors provide access to all sorts of wildlife, including burglars with small body measurements.
