Propolis found to improve immunity, reduce free radicals and attenuate chronic inflammation in HIV patients

An article demonstrates the beneficial effects of consuming 500 milligrams (mg) per day of propolis for people living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The authors found that the group given propolis, unlike the group given placebo, displayed a significant reduction in plasma levels of malondialdehyde, a marker of oxidative stress. Total antioxidant capacity increased slightly in the same group, reflecting the direct combating of free radicals.

"Although people living with HIV have excellent life expectancy, one of the problems still faced is the question of premature aging," said biologist Karen Ingrid Tasca.

This process of premature aging is due to constant activation of the immune system and chronic inflammation. According to Tasca, oxidative stress "goes hand in hand" with these two problems and must therefore be controlled.

In earlier work, the researchers had already demonstrated that propolis decreased oxidative stress and mitigated inflammatory parameters in HIV patients. That study evidenced an increase in proliferation of CD4+ T cells, considered the virus's main target, and increased expression of the transcription factor Foxp3, a marker of regulatory T cells (Tregs), important gatekeepers of the immune system and modulators of inflammation.

"The results show propolis to be an alternative to improve the immune response and reduce inflammation in asymptomatic patients. Infection by HIV leads to intense dysregulation of the immune system, loss of cellular functionality and chronic inflammation," said Fernanda Lopes Conte.

The researchers monitored the dietary and health habits of the 40 participants (half of whom received propolis) during the 90 days of the intervention. There the researchers observed an absence of adverse events in the group given propolis and an increase in serum levels of magnesium, an element that contributes to homeostasis.

I harvest the honey, pollen and wax, but never propolis, for the most part I scrape it off and toss it on the ground.

I’ll have to figure out a way to harvest the propolis.

How is “excellent life expectancy” compatible with “premature aging”?

I saw that, too.

I love propolis. I make toothpaste with equal l parts baking soda and coconut oil, a few drops of peppermint oil, clove oil, a few drops of oregano oil and propolis!
It has many uses one used is coping with toothaches. You can coat a tooth with liquid propolis. They sell a 70% tincture and you can dilute it with Everclear as needed. One ounce is about $20.00.
I also make a mouthwash with peroxide and peppermint with propolis

It’s just tree sap. Bees use it to glue everything. And I mean everything.

It’s even worse than that. It is anything sticky a bee can use. I have seen my bees collect “propolis” from a newly applied window glaze.

Just save it in the fall after it gets hard and durring your winter cleanups. Messing with it in the summer is way too messy. Scrape it off with your hive tool and toss the hard bits into a mason jar and save it. You can make alcohol tincture out of it with your favorite brand of vodka. I put about a cup of propolis in with a pint of 80 proof, seal it up good, shake it once a week for about 3 months and you have a tincture that you can take a dropper full each day. If its too strong because you used everclear your first time you can use that to paint on the interior of your hives and swarm traps to give them that lived in feel/smell. Its real easy stuff.

Is propolis bee polin helpful for reducing inflammation for everyone? —Where the assumption is that the older you get the more you could use all kinds of ingredients to put a lid on inflammation that builds naturally with age?

I will see how much I can collect this year.

In some ways, more than the honey, and wax, I’m amazed at how fast bees can bees can produce propolis.

It would be interesting to know how the life insurance companies handle pricing and coverage. The rates should be surcharged. I suspect it is all hush, hush between the companies and regulators.

Funny how we are so concerned about smoking while obesity and homosexual activities get free passes.
