Barry Goldwater.

None of us would be at FR today had not Goldwater carefully enunciated the conservative cause.

#1 George Washington declined an offer of kingship.
#2 Ronald Reagan held back the Leftist scourge for 8 years.
#3 Donald Trump held battled an even more powerful Left, but it remains to be seen how he will rank in greatness - very possibly #1.

Lincoln is not on my list at all. He made very moving speeches that seduced a lot of people, but ultimately, he used brutal military force to quash dissent - thereby missing the whole point of “by the people”.

Yes, and I guess your next choices behind Sherman were Stalin, Mao, Pom Pot.
The man tolerated theft, rape, and wanton destruction.

I thank God that this list is far more difficult to write than one of our “least favorite” Americans, which would write itself.

Eisenhower, who led the US to victory in World War II, who had the balls as president to round up and physically, deport, illegal aliens. We need that courage today! I also say, Lincoln, he fought to keep the country together, he freed the slaves, ultimately gave his life for that effort. George Washington. He was a citizen soldier, was president, and did not buy all accounts enrich himself or act like King.

My sincere apologies, I thought the question was favorite president, not just favorite American. On that point yes, Frederick Douglass is also on my top 10.

The great shame was making Oaklahoma a State. Jackson was trying to move west, so they would not be killed in GA.
