That's an interesting point. And I think it would be true if people (including you and me) are thinking rationally.

I think there are many influences on people that may cause them to deviate from rational thinking. Things like threats, pressure from authority figures, stress in general, fear (immediate and distant), indoctrination/brainwashing/gaslighting, etc.
