Kayla Rooney passed away unexpectedly, her club, St Brigid's LGFCC New York, based in the Bronx, confirmed A young sportswoman who played GAA and Camogie in New York has died suddenly. Kayla Rooney, who played for the U17s, passed away unexpectedly, St Brigid's Ladies Gaelic Football and Camogie Club announced this morning.
The teenager is survived by her parents, Michael and Siobhán, brother Jack, and sister Sarah, who, along with her sibling, have been members of St Brigid's, located in the Bronx, since they were young girls.
Kayla's age and cause of death are not known at this time. Following her untimely passing, tributes from across the sporting community and beyond have poured in online for Kayla, who has been described as a "kind, beautiful" girl.
"It is with great sadness that our club announces the sudden passing of our U17 Football & Camogie player, Kayla Rooney," a spokesperson for St Brigid's wrote on Facebook.
"Kayla’s parents have been proud supporters of their girls and our club from the start.
"Her infectious smile will be sorely missed both on and off the field. We are sending all our love and prayers to her parents, Michael and Siobhán, brother Jack, and sister Sarah.
"Please keep her family, friends, teammates, and our club in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time. May Kayla Rest in Peace."
Kerri Ann O'Connor commented: "Truly heartbreaking. Rest In Peace sweet girl. Love and prayers for the Rooney’s and all that loved Kayla," while Aoife Stuttard said: "Rest in peace my beautiful best friend."
Joan Kiely Henchy expressed her sadness, saying: "There are no words. My deepest condolences on the loss of a beautiful girl."
Tom Woodlock seconded the sentiment, penning: "Terribly sad and cruel. May beautiful Kayla Rest in Eternal peace. Sincere condolences to her heartbroken family and friends and neighbors."
Oonagh Mcelhatton added: "Absolutely heartbreaking. I only met Kayla once and that was enough to show what a nice kind girl she was."
Gaelic clubs in the city also made their sympathy known in reaction to the news. New York Ladies GAA posted: "Sending love and prayers to Kayla’s family, friends, and teammates at this terrible time."
Gaelic 4 Girls New York said: "Sending our thoughts and prayers to Kayla’s Family friends and teammates. May Kayla rest in peace."
WestPut Setanta, a Gaelic Football Club founded in Katonah, NY, shared their sorrow, writing: "Our deepest sympathies to the Rooney family, all of Kayla's friends, and the St Brigid's club. May Kayla rest in peace."
