The continental divide trail (CDT)runs thru that general area, those mountains could easily be above 12,000 ft, which means they could have some small amount of snow year round.
According to the article they didn’t have outward signs of trauma like a bear attack, gun shot wounds, etc. probably got lost, weren’t prepared for the cold and froze to death.

Yeah, that's probably a clue though, that clown from Florida murdered his girlfriend while they were camping (at least, that's what he'd told her they were doing) and buried her in a shallow grave, then left the state using their vehicle.
