He has had a life-long problem that was poorly understood when he was young. He overcame it enough that although he still struggled he had a successful career. Why would a conservative snipe at anyone like that?

I have two things going...dyslexia and synesthesia (where sounds and numbers have color). I was never formally diagnosed until I was in the USAF in my 20's.

Two things came out of it in my life:

I never knew I was different from anybody else.

I had developed many coping mechanisms that allowed me to deal with it before I knew it was a problem....so it wasn't.
