She was a PE teacher. The boy was 17. Stories say she "groomed" him, but many 17-year-old boys wouldn't require much grooming. Oddly, her now-former husband said he'd seen her in bed with the boy on several occasions.

Oddly, her now-former husband said he'd seen her in bed with the boy on several occasions. Are we sure it was a boy? If it was a boy, most husbands would want a divorce. If she was in bed with a cute 17 year old girl, a lot of husbands would contentedly watch.
That would also explain the "they" pronoun.
