Ukrainian Ground Forces received a well-worth additional strength in the form of a new tank brigade.
Demobilized, reactivated, used as replenishment and reactivated again. That’s the story of Ukrainian 5th Tank Brigade through the last years. The unit was formed back in 2016 as a reserve tank brigade, but was subsequently demobilized and reactivated only after the Russian full-scale invasion in February 2022.
However, due to fierce fighting on many fronts during the first months and the losses in other combat brigades, tanks and manpower were used as replenishment and the path of 5th Tank Brigade seemed to be over.
In March 2023, first hints appeared that Ukrainian Command has decided to reactive 5th Tank Brigade again, possibly due to large influx of Western-donated tanks and successful tank restoration process abroad. The brigade is rumored to receive Western-donated Leopard 1A5 or M1A1 Abrams tanks. If that’s the case or not, we have to wait and see. ‘Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.” The priest dabbed tears from his eyes as his sonorous voice emerged from loudspeakers hastily assembled outside his devastated cathedral.
This was the second time that the vast, sand-yellow Transfiguration Cathedral, which sits in the heart of Odesa’s Unesco-listed historic centre, had been attacked: in the 1930s, it was torn down during Joseph Stalin’s atheism drive.
On Sunday morning, the rebuilt version was hit during a Russian airstrike on the city. A missile blew a large hole in the roof, collapsed the altar and left several walls charred by fire.
Even by the standards of Russia’s ruthless war strategy, a missile strike on a historic cathedral – one that was consecrated by the patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, no less – was a shocking development. The priests at the scene were dumbfounded.
“This is barbarism, it’s terrorism. The people who did this are not people at all,” said Myroslav Vdodovych, the cathedral’s chief priest.
Trying to find positives amid the ruins, Vdodovych said the cathedral taking the hit had prevented the missile from slamming into neighboring buildings, which had suffered some damage but saw no casualties. “In this way, we can say the cathedral saved lives.”
Later on Sunday, Odesa’s mayor, Gennadiy Trukhanov – who has long been regarded as pro-Russian, recorded an address to the Russian people.
“If you only knew how much Odesa hates you, not just hates you but despises you,” he said, speaking in Russian, his first language. “You are fighting against little children and Orthodox cathedrals.
“You are creatures without kith or kin, without morals and with no values … You know us Odesans very poorly. You will not break us, you will just make us more angry.”
Perhaps, it will help when you stop pretending this is a USA/Russia proxy war.
This is a planned strategy by Putin to re-claim the U.S.S.R break resulted republics.
The U.S.S.R ceased to exist as a country with its federal government as a sovereign state that resulted in 15 constituent republics gaining full independence on 26 December 1991.

Archbishop Viktor of Artsiz, vicar of the Odesa Diocese, has sent a letter to Patriarch Kirill (Gundyaev) of the Russian Orthodox Church and all members of the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church in connection with the strike of Russian troops on Odesa on Sunday night.

DETAILS: The Archbishop asked Kirill to draw attention to the fact that at the Council of the UOC [Ukrainian Orthodox Church] of 27.05.2022, it was decided that the church headed by the Primate of the UOC is withdrawing from his subordination.
“We demand to leave our church, our bishops and our primate alone! We have our own path, which the Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church chose. I sincerely ask you to stop. EVERY MISSILE THAT STRIKES ON THE TERRITORY OF UKRAINE TODAY IS PERCEIVED BY ITS RESIDENTS AS YOUR “BLESSING” to your children,” the letter says.
BACKGROUND:
-The Air Force of Ukraine reported that Russians fired 19 missiles of various types, including five Oniks missiles, on Odesa Oblast overnight. Air defense forces shot down nine missiles.
-The Transfiguration Cathedral was destroyed in another Russian attack on Odesa on early 23 July.
-25 architectural monuments were damaged overnight in Odesa’s centre that is under UNESCO protection
-As a result of the Russian missile attack on the city of Odesa on Sunday night, almost 50 buildings were damaged, including 25 architectural monuments, and the building of the Greek consulate was also damaged.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has condemned the Russian missile attack on the historic centre of Odesa and will send a mission to the city in the coming days to conduct a preliminary damage assessment.

QUOTE: “UESCO is deeply dismayed and condemns in the strongest terms the brazen attack carried out by the Russian forces, which hit several cultural sites in the city center of Odesa, home to the World Heritage property ‘The Historic Centre of Odesa’.”
DETAILS: It is noted that the attack damaged a number of important cultural sites, including the Transfiguration Cathedral, the first and most important Orthodox church in Odesa, founded in 1794.
QUOTE from Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director General: “This outrageous destruction marks an escalation of violence against cultural heritage of Ukraine. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda considers it wrong to ease sanctions against Russia in exchange for an agreement on the safe export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

BACKGROUND: On 17 July, Russia announced the suspension of the grain deal and threatened “risks” to the parties that decide to continue the initiative without Russia’s participation.
After that, President of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, stated that he believes in the possibility of continuing the Black Sea grain initiative after his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Following the failure of the Grain Deal, Russia has systematically attacked Odesa Oblast, targeting, among other things, port infrastructure for grain exports and storage facilities.
According to this live war map Russia is attacking almost the whole width of the front line. There is only one blue spot for Ukraine. There is no counter offensive.
