Pee-wee Herman star Paul Reubens has died at the age of 70 - after a six-year secret battle with cancer.

Reubens battled the disease with his 'trademark tenacity and wit' and was remembered for his 'remarkable character and generosity of spirit.'

In a note written by Reubens, posted to social media by his family after his Sunday death, the actor asked for forgiveness for not informing the world about his diagnosis.

'Please accept my apology for not going public with what I've been facing the last six years,' Reubens wrote.

'I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans, and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.'

His estate announced the news of his death online. They wrote on his Instagram page: 'Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens.

'An iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness.

'Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit.

'A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.'

Reubens created the beloved Pee-wee Herman with the late Phil Hartman, which led to an HBO special in 1981 and his 1985 movie Pee-wee's Big Adventure.

That led to his hit TV series Pee-wee's Playhouse, which ran from 1986 to 1991, along with the 1988 movie Big-Top Pee-wee.

But his lawyer determined that a tape seized in another case had been mistakenly included in the evidence against Reubens, and soon a plea bargain was in the works. Last month, the child pornography charge was dropped, with Rubens pleading guilty to a charge of obscenity instead

I’ve already left instructions for what I want to happen when I die, my wife and I are in agreement.

After I die, I want to be thrown into the oven, cremated, then I want my ashes to be spread around where I’m living or is the nearest body of water where I live.

I don’t want a casket, I don’t want a ceremony, I don’t want anything after I die, IMO, funerals are for the living not the dead, basically cremate me and throw me away.

What someone says or writes about is of no concern to me, I’ll be dead, hopefully I’ll be heaven, regardless of what you think, I’m working toward that.
