We always grated them as well. My grandmother n\made them, with some onion added. fried crispy brown. My late Grandfather always said he would grate potatoes all day if my Grandma would make potato pancakes with them. :)

My dad used to add grated onions and I tried it once, but did not care for it.

I like them just potatoes, unadulterated.
