Ireland rightfully resisted British rule. Ireland is for the Irish! But now they seem to be okay with admitting all sorts of Muslims.

So I really don’t have much sympathy for the Irish leadership here. Don’t come whining to me after you’ve allowed an insane wolf into your den.

What do you mean “rightfully”? Throwing away centuries of political and even cultural relations does bring things like that into question as to what right(s) were being sought.

The Irish wanted home rule (similar to what Canada has) until 1916, when the communists in what was the Irish Republican Brotherhood were able to sway public opinion towards full independence thanks to perceived cruelty following the suppression of the Rising.

Meanwhile, in 1972, the Irish threw away full independence, achieved in 1948 when the Free State became the Republic, to join the EU. I don’t know if anyone who voted in the referendum ever read the full text of what became the Third Amendment, but have a look at it:
The State may become a member of the European Coal and Steel Community (established by Treaty signed at Paris on the 18th day of April, 1951), the European Economic Community (established by Treaty signed at Rome on the 25th day of March, 1957) and the European Atomic Energy Community (established by Treaty signed at Rome on the 25th day of March, 1957).

No provision of this Constitution invalidates laws enacted, acts done or measures adopted by the State necessitated by the obligations of membership of the Communities—or prevents laws enacted, acts done or measures adopted by the Communities, or institutions thereof, from having the force of law in the State.
So the Irish went from having participation and influence in the Westminster Parliament (something that the American colonies initially demanded, to stop “taxation without representation”) to being dictated to by the EU government, whose parliament has no power to write laws but instead acts as a rubber stamp for the appointed EU Commission who has the sole power to write laws and to pass them.

That’s a good question. By that I meant the Irish have the right to be left alone, and decide their own future. Oliver Cromwell disagreed with that, and so the misery began.

And you do make a good point regarding the European Union. The Irish threw off the yolk of the British Empire, only to accept the yolk of the EU. Crazy.

I dunno. If I could glimpse into Europe 75 years from now, I suspect I’d see many wonderful cultures bowing and scraping before political correctness. And the strings will be pulled by the most disciplined group in Europe, the Muslims.

Cromwell certainly was no saint, but neither were the Irish forces that engaged in war with him. What happened in Drogheda had lots of bad repercussions in England for Cromwell too.

Remember that the union with Britain really started under Henry II, when the king of Leinster, Dermot McMurrough, swore allegiance to him and two successive popes recognized the English king as “Lord of Ireland”. And right after that, the Norman nobleman Richard “Strongbow” Fitzgilbert engaged in holy war against the remaining pagan holdouts on Irish soil. It never was really about the Irish being “left alone”.

You make an interesting argument. Thanks. On the other hand, Muslims are like weeds. They spread whenever there is no push-back. And that’s just what’s happening in Dublin today, and in so many other places in Europe. Muslims provoke. The authorities fold. Islam advances.

Oh, well. At least I have Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers on CD. That and my 12 gauge shotgun should me through at least the next crisis, at least.

Don’t forget leftism is about radical atheism too. And of course, there is the founding principle of the EU, which aside from “respecting the principles of the Charter of the United Nations” (which was derived from the 1936 USSR constitution) is encapsulated by this statement by Jean Monnet:
Europe will be forged in crisis, and will be the sum of the solutions adopted for those crises.
Given the EU’s fondness for the totalitarian measures that the World Economic Forum (originally called the European Management Forum, FTR) have dreamed up, there is no real need to guess as to the nature of those “solutions”.

I saw the Clancy Brothers plural times at Irish Fest on the fest grounds next to Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, WI years ago when I still lived up north (now in FL, thank goodness). Many years ago. They were in their band’s heyday and great music, great times back then. Nostalgia for those good old days.
