‘Like Snoop Dogg’s living room': Smell of pot wafts over notorious U.S. Open court
Associated Press ^ | August 29, 2023 | James Martinez

It’s become a stink at the U.S. Open: a pungent marijuana smell that wafted over an outer court, clouded the concentration of one of the world’s top players and left the impression there’s no place left to escape the unofficial scent of the city.

While the exact source of the smell remained a mystery Tuesday, one thing was clear: Court 17, where eighth-seeded Maria Sakkari complained about an overwhelming whiff of pot during her first-round loss, has become notorious among players in recent years for its distinctive, unmistakable odor.

“Court 17 definitely smells like Snoop Dogg’s living room,” said Alexander Zverev, the tournament’s 12th-seeded man who won his opening match on the court Tuesday. “Oh my God, it’s everywhere. The whole court smells like weed.”

Stung by stories in the wake of Sakkari’s match Monday that made it appear the U.S. Open’s stands are the sporting equivalent of a Phish concert, the United States Tennis Association conducted its own investigation, of sorts, to weed out the source of the smell.

Spokesman Chris Widmaier said the USTA questioned officials and reviewed video of the midday match and found “no evidence” anyone was smoking pot in the stands of Court 17, leading to speculation it may have come from Corona Park just outside the gates of the intimate stadium court. …

Did it smell like a Van Halen concert from 1979? Then again the weed has a mich stronger scent now.

Well, there’s no evidence, and the FBI cannot comment on an on-going investigation, so leave Hunter alone.

That’s kind of embarrassing. Guess what everybody’s clothing will be smelling like on their way home from the U.S. Court games? That’s right. The Devil’s Weed! If you’re around certain parts of The Bay Area in Northern Ca., just blame in on those Skunks, Possums and Raccoons that knocked your garbage cans over - again!

“I’ve heard it’s real bad at home San Francisco Giants games.”

You heard correctly. The phenomenon is particularly acute in the cheap seats (bleachers and upper deck) where Trayvon Martin-type teens will think nothing of firing up a blunt or a bowl during the game. Numerically, we’re not actually talking about a lot of people, but if two or three idiots are smoking weed in the bleachers you’re going to smell it within 100+ ft radius.

9/10 of Giants games I go to I sit in good seats given to me by a friend with season tickets. These are top-shelf seats, and the price keeps the riff-raff out. No one would light up a doobie there, and if they did, security would be on their ass in no time.

But, yeah, the weed thing is really bad where the plebs sit. It annoys the heck out of me. No tobacco user would dream of lighting up a cigar or cigarette there, but the stoners ignore common courtesy with their skunky, stupid weed.

That's what happens when you play in a town named Flushing.

I’d be afraid it would affect the players.

I can’t see that inhaling that is good for your lungs and they make such a big deal out of cigarettes.

Queens NY. Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, at the USTA National Tennis Center (now renamed for Billie Jean King). Specifically, Court 17.

The only hints of the location in the excerpt are the phrases “US Open” and “Corona Park”.

PS. The words “New York” appear only in the ninth paragraph.

I’ve heard it’s real bad at home San Francisco Giants games.

It's bad all over.

I briefly lived in downtown San Diego earlier this year and the stench of pot was everywhere.

And to think that as a teenager, I'd blaze up, drench myself in Drakkar Noir, and honestly believed I was pulling a fast one over on my parents.

I've always supported the legalization of marijuana, still do even if I no longer imbibe myself, but I must say I am a little bit surprised at the normalization of the public use of marijuana. I naively thought people would smoke it in the privacy of their own home. How wrong I was.

First year in decades I am done with the WOKE US OPEN. Pam Shriver, Chris Evert Lloyd are disgusting with their pandering to black players and the Billy Jean King crowd. AfteR Ons Jabeur won today, Pam Shriver announced, “THIS is fifty years of equality”!! A commercial shows a court surrounded by a fence with a sign that says “FOR WHITE PLAYERS ONLY”.

That’s like expecting people not to smoke tobacco in public, with all due respect.
