NYC’s disgusting pot stench is keeping tourists away
NY Post ^ | 9/01/23 | Johnny Oleksinski

It’s not just prissy European tennis players who can’t stand it. Every single person who visits New York City is disgusted by our unofficial new scent: marijuana.

And the truth is, so are most sane New Yorkers.

As The Post reported on Friday’s front page, everywhere you go in the five boroughs now reeks of pot. Expense-account restaurants such as Nobu 57 and ritzy stores like Saks Fifth Avenue have the musty whiff of a college dorm room. Puffing stoners are turning the subway’s 123 into CBD.

Even the US Open in Flushing Meadows is practically an open-air drug market.

Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari, who lost in the first round of the grand slam this week, told reporters she was distracted by something she sniffed during the match.

“It was weed,” the No. 8 player in the world said. “The smell, oh, my gosh.”

German ace Alexander Zverev spoke of blunts more bluntly: “Court 17 definitely smells like Snoop Dogg’s living room.”

These are Europeans we’re talking about! Most Americans think of that party-hardy continent as far more freewheeling and permissive than the US when it comes to sex, drugs and booze consumption. Well, we’ve shocked ‘em all this time.

Ever since NYC reopened to international tourists, put-off visitors have commented on our putrid fragrance. They’d grown accustomed to our summers of roasting garbage, but it’s the pot smoke that makes them dry heave.

Recently, a friend visiting from London succinctly summarized his trip to me.

“The magic is gone,” he said.

I have not been to NYC for a while.
Last time I was, I did not smell marihuana, but a sewer like stench!
I doubt I will ever visit that place again!

“Ever smell NYC on a hot summer day?”

In the 19th Century the well-to-do would leave town for places like Saratoga and Newport and arrange for a security service to watch over their residence.

1 kilogram of weed emits 3600 kg of CO2. The irony is you have the most green virtue city in the nation with folks puffing CO2 into the atmosphere while driving EVs to compensate for their CO2 emissions. Welcome to Bejing

4-5 years ago I walked across town to my brother’s apartment. It was hard to tell which scent was stronger: weed or piss

I have. Also happen to have a very sensitive sense of smell. Not quite like “The Nose” of Castle (TV series) aka Hyperosmia but close.

NYC stinks. Only in deep winter is the stink less. Have to go there for biz on occasion.

Now add pot? I happen to be highly allergic to pot. Instant migraine if I’m even near it.

The other tourist impacting issue for NYC is of course the rampant crime.

In 1969 at Kadena AFB The Air Force was getting concerned about the widespread use of marijuana among the zoomies and we had a mandatory lecture at the movie theater. A lawyer and a doctor and a chaplain and the base commander each described the evils of pot from his point of view and admonished the troops to report whenever they encountered the smell. Then they passed around baggies of a green purportedly synthetic substance that was said to mimic the smell of burning marijuana. The doctor, I think, said the substance was primarily equine manure. On the way out I after it was over i heard an old sergeant say to another sergeant, “27 years in the Air Force and this is what I get, a bag of horse shit and they don’t even let me keep it.” And yes, if you go to visit a horse farm you might think you are smelling marijuana and it might bethat or it might be horse manure.

Approximately 2.2 pounds of ganj emits nearly four tons of CO2? Damn! That is truly a climate catastrophe! Bro, put down that bong. . .

Maybe it’s the literal “great unwashed” homeless pooping and peeing on the streets and sidewalks.

So many of the same people who wanted to ban cigarettes and make 2nd hand smoke illegal now have no problem with marijuana smell everywhere…. 🧐

My daughter lived in lower east Manhattan until last year. We loved visiting. There are some of the greatest restaurants in the world there. The locals are actually consistently nice

It isn’t just NYC.

I was down in Jacksonville, Fla. a few weeks ago and even at the beach the whole town smells like a Cheech and Chong movie.

They have medical MJ there, so I guess just about everyone has some sort of medical condition that requires stinking up the whole town.

If I wanted to see a liberal city I’d just look in the toilet after my morning drop off and save the $$.

Downton Vegas on a Saturday night is known for its “contact highs.” Love is in the air. LOL!
