Jeffrey Miller (shown) was 270 feet away from the guardsmen. The other three dead were between 330 to 390 feet away. At least one person was just walking between buildings and was not involved in the protests.
The SDS leaders that fomented the real rioting and burning of the old ROTC building were gone by the time of the shooting iirc.

I found out about Kent State a couple of days later. When it went down, I was on a Vietnamese Navy PBR several miles north of Tan Chau (I.e., in Cambodia).
Saw Tv stories when we got back to the YRBM. The general consensus was that four should have been forty. After I got back and went through the protest gauntlet at SFO to get home, I was thinking 400…
