As it moves to an online strategy amid rampant increase in shoplifting CVS is making drastic reforms to adjust to the needs of modern online shoppers Rival Walgreens also plans to shut 150 stores as part of a modernization drive
CVS is set to close hundreds of stores across the country as they undergo a complete retail overhaul – as more stores move towards online sellers amid rampant increases in crime.
The major drugstore chain has announced that they will be culling 300 stores by the end of 2024, and 600 more by 2027, around ten percent of all shops.
In the announcement, they said that they were undergoing a new 'retail footprint strategy', as retailers across the US struggle to adjust to post-pandemic footfall.
More shoppers are turning to buying online in the wake of the pandemic, as well as rocketing levels of shoplifting affecting sales in stores.
CVS claims that 'local market dynamics, population shifts, and a community's store density' are some of the aspects they have looked into when deciding which stores to shutter.
'We remain focused on the competitive advantage provided by our presence in thousands of communities across the country, which complements our rapidly expanding digital presence.'
The company confirmed that they are pushing to turn more of its stores into healthcare destinations in an attempt to drum up more claims for its insurance business.
It is also working to expand the HealthHub business, despite investigators finding in June that the company failed to provide proper interpretation services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing during their appointments with medical staff.
The Department of Justice and CVS came to a settlement agreement that requires the company to change its policies.

CVS had GREAT coupons about 15 years ago.
Always printed out. I bought tons of stuff there and gave away a lot of things.
I went in one day with previous coupons and discounts.
Bought 2 24-pack toilet paper, 2 bags Mexican style tortilla chips, and 2 12 packs of Pepsi.
Anyways at least $37 plus tax.
I paid 8 cents. 🤣🤣🤣
I just kept buying and buying.
There may have been 2 jars salsa too.
You spent the whole amount of money except discount coupons BUT you always got merchandise they wanted to move.
I had like 30 tubes of toothpaste.
My friends refused to take anymore for free. 🤣🤣
It was crazy good.
Then they changed it all. Too bad.
Now have hardly been back the last 12 years.
BidenDepression 2023 maybe Spring, 2024
That’s why they need World War III as a distraction.
I knew a guy who had four CVS cards. So when things were FREE, he would get four instead of one.
“When I was taking a daily statin I ordered them online from TelMed. Now there is GoodRx which shops the price for prescription drugs for you. It was cheaper then going to the local stores.”
My local CVS pharmacists have access to all the coupon companies, like GoodRX and scan through them all to get the customer the best possible price alternative to what the person’s insurance would charge. The whole thing is weird, but that’s what is happening. They don’t want to lose the business to the coupon outfits, so apparently have a side deal going with them!
I use CVS. I have their Carepass/Extracare, too. Small annual fee, 20% off their brands, $10 to spend each month and a ton of stackable coupons. I usually stop there once a month...and stock up. My bills cut in half. You just have to watch the coupon ex. dates. Saved almost $500 this year. I love it. At least once a month I get a 25% or 35% off entire purchase coupon. It adds up.
There are two n in my small city a couple miles apart - no need for two.
I’ve been ‘prepping’ heavily since 2002; looks like it’s going to come to fruition, very soon. I hope you’re ready for it.
I have good experiences ordering online thru Walgreens (as opposed to Walmart, Rite Aid which had me pulling out hair with hard to navigate websites). I didn’t get around to trying CVS. About Walgreens, they have a lot of specials on personal care products if you buy their store brand and if you buy two of a product. Free shipping thru Fed Ex if you order $35 or more. Takes about five days to arrive but it comes well-boxed in good condition.
Unfortunately, they’re headed our way. :(
There is a problem with individual theft but most of this seems on the level of organized retail crime networks. Multinational criminal organizations, drug-trafficking operations, dangerous gangs, violent crime rings, etc. It is definitely not nonviolent or even necessarily local police related, more than due to inflation and like the work for the FBI and Homeland Security which was why I was asking — why now ?
True, and when they started building them to be drive-through, it became more obvious.
There are three near me within a 3-minute drive of each other. One is on the main street, a conversion from a small supermarket, and the other two were built brand new near highways.
I suspect the store planning team at CVS was determining locations based on sales of convenience store items, not health items. They were likely using data from suppliers of their convenience items.
I see CVS stores located like 7-11s would be but without lottery, cigarette, coffee, and alcohol sales, the CVS stores are wrong for the location.
Bingo
The company confirmed that they are pushing to turn more of its stores into healthcare destinations in an attempt to drum up more claims for its insurance business.

Wow... I’ve never heard about that before. Interesting. We do have a local CVS here but talk has been that it may close.
Good point about big organized crime. I keep reading that, too.
Of course, the crime bosses that lead these syndicates see all the things that I wrote about and know they can easily recruit and organize street-level crooks to do the hits because those street-level people know they won’t be penalized. So the big bosses are capitalizing on all the things I listed. That would explain the “why now.”
CVS is also building a new store on the same corner as a Walgreens near me in Florida. I don’t get it.
Plus, you had a lot of consolidation in that business. Over the years CVS has swallowed up a number of other chains, like Osco, Sav-on, Long’s and more, leading them into a situation where they now have too many locations competing against each other. Same thing happened with Macy’s buying up other department store chains.
We have two.
I hardly ever see any people in them...................
I was in NYC 11 days ago and needed some allergy meds. Went into the Walgreens near Times Square. EVERYTHING of any value was behind a locked plexiglass door.
I could understand why, with all the potheads smelling up the street with their stinkweed, the criminal illegals everywhere, etc..
If these pharmacies / convenience stores aren't going broke from theft, they're going broke because people like me walk out of them due to being unable to find ANYONE who can unlock a door for a simple bottle of Claritin.
What a poor position CVS/Walgreens etc.. are in: Damn'ed if they protect themselves from getting robbed blind and damn'ed if they don't.
Sorta but not nearly enough
Still got car problems x2
Nothing says success like closing 900 stores.....
