In the right hands, the Gold Wing does better than you probably expect.
I don’t have to wonder. Been there done that.

Yeah, it almost works, but WHY?
What Happens When You Take A Honda Gold Wing Off Road In Sand?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the sand is wet, it’s like a highway...
Ive owned 5 Harleys and feel I have the right to slam Harleys to the most hardcore bikers. I am merciless on savaging Harley and Harley groupies.
When I rode I switched to a Goldwing in a Veterens Motorcycle group amidst all Harleys.
I had a custom patch made up to put on my vest that said ..
“I eat pork with my rice”.
(Harley Hog / Riceburner...get it?)
Pissed everyone off.
I pissed off a hardcore Harley fan one day . He had his Ultra Classic bags all torn off the bike and he had his gay little $80 air suspension pump, pumping up his suspension , then putting the bags back on to see if that was enough, removing them and pumping some more air then checking...etc....
I rode up and said “Hey John whatchya doing?” while pressing the air suspension button on my Goldwing going up and down and up and down because my Goldwing had an onboard air compressor that automatically pumped or deflated my suspension at a push of the button.
Honda Goldwings are basically La-Z-Boys on wheels
First lower the tire pressures by A LOT?
own and ride a 98 Harley Electra glide classic just turned 399 k miles on her enjoy riding in comfort 80 years old still two wheeling.
The original Gold Wing, pre-winneabago stage, was a big bike, but not a two wheeled dump truck like a HD. Dual front disks like many of us were doing with 500 and 750 Hondas.
A guy at the Rock Store 70’s had a “cafe racer” style one.
Always wondered about cornering clearance of those cylinders.
Of course, the BMW guys had figured out how to deal with that.
I used to ride a BMW 1150GS. Loved that bike. I went on several long rides with my Harley friends. The thing that always struck me was that Harley markets their bikes to the “rugged individualist”. But I always got a laugh because all the Harley riders look the same. They all wore basically the same setup. I was the one that was different.
LOL...hilarious. That guy is one HAPPY dude! His enthusiasm and laughter are contagious.
Been there. Done that. The V-Storm worked way better. I rode a Gold Wing for 5 years. Nice quiet ride. Good technology. Too much plastic to remove to get to anything. I switched back to an Electra-Glide Classic. The GW1800 was just too boring.
I worked for Honda as a mechanic when the Gold Wing first came out. The clutches were a weak point. We replaced many under warranty for guys who thought that it was Honda’s new drag bike. It was a job. The flat rate manual paid 8 hours as you were expected to pull the engine from the frame to do it. However, I figured how to do it with the right tools and cut the job down to about half that time without pulling the engine from the frame. As I recall, we used to put 305 valve springs in them instead of the stock clutch springs. The clutch seemed to then take more abuse and last longer.
Pops was a shriner, M/C squad... I was the polish monkey and later the shade tree mechanic. I hated that HD.
Never owned one, never will. My oldest is Master Mechanic and a mechanical engineer, he doesn’t like HD’s from an engineering standpoint. If it’s a V, it has to be 90° or it’s inefficient. He’s not too keen on horizontally opposed engines either.
Me? Vertical twins, inline 4s or thumpers... but my riding days are over for the most part.
We have had two Goldwings.
They aren’t really made for off-road driving.......................
LOL...
