Doesn't have to be that way ... there's a cool new tech that generates ammonia (and oxygen) from water, nitrogen (from the air), and electricity. It's not commercialized yet, but sounds very promising.

Waste enough money and energy, you can do lots of stupid stuff. Doesn't make the stupid stuff "promising".
