Mold in Army barracks has become an increasingly common problem at bases around the country. But the issue isn’t the mold, according to the commander of the 1st Armored Division, but rather discipline within the Army. Soldiers, Maj. Gen. James P. Isenhower III said, simply need to be better about “adulting.”
And the general wants to be clear, he meant that negatively. Isenhower made the remarks on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at a panel at the Association of the United States Army conference. He and Lt. Gen. Omar J. Jones IV took questions from the crowd, including from one soldier who asked about military housing. “There are some areas that are still dilapidated,” the soldier asked. “How do we avoid being on the Army Times — mold, asbestos, and so forth.” Isenhower said the biggest way was addressing a “discipline problem” among soldiers.
“I do use this in a pejorative term, and it’s adulting,” he told the crowd at AUSA. “But a lot of times we just need to teach young soldiers and young family members what is appropriate and what is part of their obligation and basic responsibility as an adult.”
Mold has been an increasing and major issue with enlisted soldiers, with serious cases of mold reported at multiple bases, including Fort Stewart, Fort Liberty and others. Isenhower pointed to contributing factors such as climate and humidity at certain bases, but continued on his comments on discipline.

FAKE NEWS - The US spends $1T a year on its military, therefore it is IMPOSSIBLE that buildings at our bases have mold.
(well, that was the ‘rationale’ used to say that Russia couldn’t defeat our front line ground weapons)
We would have caught living hell for that when I went into the Army. Of course, we didn’t have cell phones to keep us occupied and waste our time. We had buffers and Johnson Wax to keep us occupied and living in WWII barracks still in spotless condition.
In my experience, mold comes from damp/wet conditions that are subject to heat and humidity. I’d say that if there’s a problem them the environmental controls like HVAC are the problem. The only way to combat it in those conditions without proper HVAC is to constantly scrub and clean and/or chemtreat.
Agreed.
I went through Basic at Fort Polk in bloody hot and humid summer in Louisiana. LBJ -- a four letter word to me -- had sent "that" letter.... Fort Polk even had a meningitis scare. But no mold, nor whining about mold. And -- yeah -- among other things we scrubbed a lot.
Perhaps today's sensitive military top brass -- "trying to understand white rage: and such -- think mold is trans-mold and should be respected....
It says barracks, but I can't keep from wondering if they mean base housing instead. We cleaned the barracks every day and a GI party every week.
When in the USAF back in 1966-1969 we kept our barracks nice and clean. Once clean it was easy to keep clean. Then one day they said we needed to move to a different barracks, the one used by the Apes(Air Police) who were moved somewhere else.
Talk about a nasty barracks! The showers had mold growing all over them, soap scum was everywhere! We managed to get them clean by putting bleach in a spray bottle and killing the mold, then came the cleanup of scraping the thick layer of soap scum in the shower.
I sometimes think they moved the barracks around just so we could clean the APE barracks.
Quick GI test: Tell my what you smell when you see thins picture.
In my day, even the lawns were disciplined-they were afraid to grow, being mowed constantly by GI powered push mowers.
That was a great scene.
No Time For Sergeants is an all-time classic.
My dad who retired from the US Army 1963 swore up and down that they got the idea form a guy in his company. The guy pulled latrine duty for some big-time inspection coming through and after spending a few days scrubbing every inch, went to the mess hall and got some peanut butter and plopped a big chunk into the last toilet. On the day of the inspection the General was admiring the latrine when he spotted the “spot”. He asked the soldier what that was, and the soldier stuck his finger in it, then put it in his mouth and said “tastes like shit to me sir!
Good senior enlisted hit the door in the face of the woke army, now they have dorks and dweebs that aren’t worth a plug nickel for senior NCO’s with the result being the blind leading those who can’t see. Make no mistake about it, pretty good commisioned officers are a dime a dozen, but great NCO’s are the real backbone of the Armed Services and are the real leaders of all five services.(This includes the Coast Guard where I was given firearms and live ammo on several occasions)
The smells: a musty old tent with sweat and occasional intestinal gas, the smell of a space heater on cold nights
The sounds: At Grafenwohr and Hohenfels, the snorting of wild boars as they sneaked in at night looking for something good to eat (and they smelled, too!)
Obviously you don’t understand that this a global warming and COVID vaccination issue. /s
Some illiterate dope in his lineage mangled a once nice German name... so this person may have started life as an idiot.
yep, its a joke to think that mentally ill people who cant even figure out what sex they are or who think sticking their pecker in another man hairy butthole is sanitary will keep their living space clean enough to prevent mold
LOL! Oh the good old days.
The real problem with the military is the mold and rot that infects the so-called leadership which appears to be far more interested in promoting leftist BS rather than training and preparing to effective wage war.
