If you could choose just three types of firearms that are essential for a well armed citizen to own, which would you recommend?
Pump shotgun
Semi-automatic rifle - AR-15 or AR-10 (I’m a 30 cal guy myself)
Handgun.. Semi or revolver. I’m a wheel gun guy. Ruger GP-100 rules
I agree.
With any you need to ensure the ammo supply is readily available
When all mine burned, I replaced with a 410 Mossberg, Rugar hand gun, 9mm carbine.
Wait, If I have an AR-15, AR-10 and AK-47 does that mean I have to get rid of everything else?
1. A handgun. I like my compact .45
2. A rifle. AR-10 in .308 is a good mix of distance and stopping power.
3. A pump or semi-auto shotgun. Lots of versatile rounds to make your shotgun a multi-purpose defense weapon.
AR (no need to spend more than $500), 9mm sidearm (balance size between concealability and capacity and accuracy on the range - biggest one you can conceal - Taurus G2 13 rds / G19 16 rds / Canik TP9 19 rds), pump 12 gauge shotgun (lots of nice ones from Turkey, no need to spend more than $300). Don’t forget extra magazines. No need to spend more than $10 each for AR mags. Shop extensively for good clone mags for the sidearms - they can be expensive). Use ammoseek.com to shop for feed.
I recommend:
12g pump shotgun - I have an 8 shot
Semi-automatic rifle - AR-15 - ubiquitous
Handgun -Semi 45 - stopping power
9mm, .45ACP, .308/7.62 NATO, .223/5.56 NATO...
A rifle, AR platform of some sort, if .223/5.56 get a .22LR conversion. Some sort of shotgun in 20 or 12, if a SxS look into caliber converters, but my choice would be a pump. a glock handgun or a revolver. If a glock look into caliber conversions (40 will do 9 with a barrel/magazine/extractor swap) If a revolver, something in the .357 family, and have the cylinder milled/smithed to accept moon clips for 9mm. JM2B YMMV.
- 9mm Glock with good magazine capacity
- Pump shotgun (Mossberg)
- .308 bolt action rifle
357mag revolver, 12 gauge pump, AK or suitable AR.
I’d take an AK-47, M 16, and shotgun.
Hmm, a 155mm howitzer, a minigun, and I guess for the third, one of those automated anti-aircraft/anti-missile guns they have on naval ships.
For a defense profile... not hunting? Easy:
Rifle|shotgun|pistol
AR|Keltec KSG|Glock
You’re welcome.
just for reference My revolver choice is .327Fed, because i can use .32 s&w, .32 mag, and .327, it will even fire .32 acp in a pinch. I just look at the “only 3 guns” situation as what can I do to increase my probabilities for finding ammo.
Circlecity nailed it!
And...NOTHING better than practice, practice, practice.
Long guns
Handguns
Black powder guns
I think that’s a pretty inclusive list.
The easiest ammo to find would be 22lr, 9mm, 223 and 12ga. 308:to a lesser degree. Plan accordingly.
Yes 22lr is not adequate but is still deadly at close ranges and better than nothing.
If you live where AR15s are banned you might be able to find a Ruger Mini14. They are in 223 and also Ruger makes in 7.62x39. Not generally quite as accurate as an AR, they are extremely reliable and easier to clear a jam due to the Garand style action. I have both a mini and an AR. The mini is a bit more handy. Reloading is a tad more difficult.
