I remember reading a Free Republic article post about Army recruits entering the service without “without learning basic skills” from their public education and needing special training before entering basic training.

Mastery of mastery of reading, writing or math to graduate from our Ivy League universities is not needed. The students can’t even figure out that the Hamas is an evil cancer on mankind.

This underachievement is undermining America’s position in the world.

Parents could care less that their children master reading, writing and math. Even if their kids make the good grade point for college entrance, they don’t want to pay the outrageous prices to send their children to college. Do they trust a college that’s filled with loony professors that preach Marxism and vomit antisemitic crap? What do their kids need to know to drive a lift truck through the Amazon warehouse?

“So basically that’s saying that students of color are incapable of mastering reading, writing or math.”

That might be an implication some would understand it to be, but IMHO there are a lot of dumbasses in Oregon, but Oregon doesn’t necessarily stand alone.

“Later, she predicted that nationwide most students would not be able to read nor write and do simple math.”

You ought to see them try to use a tape measure. “Show me 5 and 9/16ths”. It is embarrassing.

You’re singing from from my hymn book. Encountered this first in the late 80s & was flabbergasted. Now, it just seems to be status quo, like spelling not being important on the Internet.

No matter how good the teachers and schools are, if the kids refuse to learn reading and math, there is nothing the school can do. When I was in school and received a report card my DAD would review it with me, in detail. If I had a grade less than an A I would get a long lecture on how I had to do better. If I got less than a B all hell broke loose. No going outside to play, no TV, etc. I’m guessing many of these kids have no dad and no consequences for bad grades.

Hmmm.... Misleading headline.

I’m not an Oregonian, but this sounds like an extra test given to graduating HS seniors.

If it works the way it did in my state, then it goes like this:

All these students passed all their high school classes, but if they can’t score high enough on this extra test, they’re denied a diploma.

IOW, the state doesn’t trust its own schools to teach well or grade correctly. Instead of improving its school system, the state requires the students to take an extra test.

My kids didn’t go to public school, and even I don’t think that requirement is fair to public school students.

Parents, if your state doesn’t trust its own public schools, why do you trust those schools with your kids?

BTW, it has nothing to do with race. That’s just political nonsense.

If that’s a genetic feature then so be it.

the pause on the controversial graduation requirement

It's now controversial to expect any positive outcomes from the trillions taxpayers MUST spend on public schools. That's nice.
