When the COVID-19 pandemic took off in 2020, so too did questions over the effectiveness of wearing a face mask to prevent the spread of the virus. Now, three and a half years later, what does the science say?
In an interview for 60 Minutes, CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook posed that question to Linsey Marr, a Virginia Tech University professor specializing in aerosol science.
"They are very helpful in reducing the chances that the person will get COVID because it's reducing the amount of virus that you would inhale from the air around you," Marr said about masks.
No mask is 100% effective. An N95, for example, is named as such because it is at least 95 percent efficient at blocking airborne particles when used properly. But even if a mask has an 80% efficiency, Marr said, it still offers meaningful protection.
"That greatly reduces the chance that I'm going to become infected," Marr said.
Marr said research shows that high-quality masks can block particles that are the same size as those carrying the coronavirus. Masks work, Marr explained, as a filter, not as a sieve. Virus particles must weave around the layers of fibers, and as they do so, they may crash into those fibers and become trapped.
Marr likened it to running through a forest of trees. Walk slowly, and the surrounding is easy to navigate. But being forced through a forest at a high speed increases the likelihood of running into a tree.
"Masks, even cloth masks, do something," she said.

They're engaging the gaslighting once again.
Stay frosty.
How many dictates will “free” people acquiesce to?
Masks are effective at virtue signaling.
“Put your mask on” will be fighting words to me. There will be no more of that crap. My response will be “Make me”.
MSN and See-BS.
Two of the Empire’s most reliable house organs, for spreading needless information across the land.
Masks are the latest version of the Nazi armband.
Heh. It’s not “Virginia Tech University.” It’s just Virginia Tech. These folks want you to take them seriously, but they always make the simplest mistakes.
I’m dumbfounded as to the number of people STILL wearing masks, smh, it’s disturbing.
If mask were effective and the virus was “trapped” in the mask, wouldn’t the mask then become bio-hazard and dangerous to handle and disposed of?
Having worked in a hospital when I was young I came in contact with patients in isolation and there was a strict protocol on what to wear into the room, and how to dispose of the hat, gloves, MASK and gowns when leaving the room. There were RED BIO HAZARD bins for these items and they were burned.
Yet millions of mask were just tossed in the trash (or the street) and nothing was said.
I did my part. I had one mask in the car and used the same mask for the entire time. Putting it on when I was forced to and taking it off as soon as I cold.
I did not get covid or the flu.
THIS IS ABSOLUTE CRAP!
There is absolutely no study anywhere, ever done that shows community masking has any statistically significant impact on transmission rates or outcomes.. this is a flat out lie.
The “particles” viruses are “attached to,” as I understand it, are “water droplets.”
Unlike dirt, water droplets very quickly evaporate, and those viruses then become free floaters you can breathe in.
The Mask manufacturers know more than these doctors.
My mask protocol is, when handed a mask to blow my nose in it and hand it back with a smile and a thank you. But that’s just me.
Starting off with “What Science Knows Now” is a sure way to capture the libs and get their full attention. Throwing the word “Science” into anything and they’re on board.
I thought the magic vaccines were guaranteed to stop the Red China Virus.
Guess not.
stating that masks “do something” is like spraying watch through a chain link fence and pointing out afterwards.. SEE!! (as you feel the fence) It did something!
And the people (including those attention-desperate medical "experts") who promote the fiction -- the delusion -- that a mask will provide protection from a respiratory virus such as the Fauci Flu are simply ignorant or they are lying to you. This is also reality.
My concern isn't as much that "experts" of the nearly fully discredited (from dispensing medical advice) medical industry are ingnorant or are liars (or that they practice "political science" in contrast to "science"); my concern is why now? What is their professional/personal motivation for resurrecting the masking folly that results in damage -- serious damage -- to the masker's health and to society as a whole? Why now, indeed?
