Life on another planet? Oh noes.

Please stop with the constant need to keep your stupid job(s).

Uranus stinks to high heaven. :)

I’d be a little concerned if my Doc told me, “Drill, Uranus is inflamed due to the interaction of gaseous particles with a powerful magnetic field.” But I’d believe him.

Who lives on Uranus? Klingons, of course!

Sorry-I should know better….

There would be nothing Earth shattering about finding microbial life on any of the planets beyond Earth. Microbes had been blown all over the solar system from Earth via the solar wind.

"...parallel to the plane of the Solar System, with an axial tilt of 97.77°..."

It took me a minute, but I was finally able to visualize that. That's just crazy. Kinda made me dizzy imagining the planet's spin, while on the path around the Sun.

Great post to get an otherwise drab Monday off to a smile-worthy start...

IMHO, 20-years ago, this thread would already be above a 200 count...

It’s not just the poles flipped.. it’s actually that the magnetic axis of the planet is different from the axis of rotation, by almost 60 degrees. So a compass on Uranus would point towards somewhere closer to the equator than to the north pole.

“Drill, Uranus is inflamed due to the interaction of gaseous particles with a powerful magnetic field.”

That’s why I use my shirt pocket instead of my pants for my phone.

If I recall correctly, our own (Earth’s) magnetic field axis isn’t the same as our rotational axis, either. I think it’s moving a little each year.

Yes, but that’s on the order of a few degrees, (less than 2 degrees I think), not 59 degrees.

[snip] Lead author Emma Thomas, a PhD student in the University of Leicester School of Physics and Astronomy, said: “The temperature of all the gas giant planets, including Uranus, are hundreds of degrees Kelvin/Celsius above what models predict if only warmed by the sun, leaving us with the big question of how these planets are so much hotter than expected? ..." The scientific, technical term for that particular glow is joe-glow.
