GM Is Stalling EV Production Because Demand Is Falling Off

General Motors is building Silverado EVs. It delivered a whole 18 of them during the third quarter of this year. It planned to expand production beyond its Detroit-Hamtramck facility, also known as "Factory Zero", by 2024 to Orion Assembly where the Bolt EV is built, albeit not for much longer. That plan has now been pushed back to late 2025, and according to GM, the decision was not made due to any supply shortages, or even the ongoing United Auto Workers strike. It could be indicative of waning consumer enthusiasm for fully electric vehicles as a whole.

The automaker cited "evolving EV demand" and engineering improvements to the vehicle as causes for the delay. In a further statement to the Detroit Free Press, a spokesperson for the automaker expressed that "the trendline for EVs is stabilizing," going further to explain that demand is "not rising as fast as originally forecasted." That's bad news for an automaker that plans to completely electrify its lineup by 2035. Of course, it's far from the only car company with such goals.

There are plenty of ways to slice this pie, but any arguments pertaining to a lack of component supply are gradually growing thin. GM is producing more and more GMC Hummer EVs, Cadillac Lyriqs, and other electric models. It's even begun making its own battery cells at scale in Ohio, although there have been some considerable hiccups on site. The bottom line seems to be that the automaker believed it could sell a ton of electric cars and trucks, but it was too ambitious.

“Green Energy” seemed like a good idea when interest rates were Zero, government could grow debt massively without worry from the bond-market, real energy like oil was cheap, no one cared if China controlled the whole supply-chain, our wars were with tiny countries like Somalia and Afghanistan, not Russia and Iran

Now? Not so much

“It could be indicative of waning consumer enthusiasm for fully electric vehicles as a whole.”

More gaslighting. Enthusiasm was never “waxing”.

General Motors is building Silverado EVs

The Secret Service should have been first in line for those.

FJB should have directed they take delivery to show that he walks the walk.

The goal was never to force people to drive EVs. The goal is to force people to live in high density democrat-controlled cities and ride mass transit.

Rich democrats can then ride around in their $100K+ EVs without worrying about traffic.

“waning consumer enthusiasm for fully electric vehicles as a whole. “

That’s not it-

Way too expensive, too limited range, too many other obstacles for full use.

Many folks would like the simplicity of a plug in car for local use. Think of an extra-maxxed out Monster Golf Cart.

Gotta drive 2 miles to the Beer Store? Good option.
5 miles to the Docs office? Good option.
Like that classic convertible in the garage (What? You don’t have one?), really for limited use in fair weather.

Lots of limited-use potential, but the eco-system for All-Electrics beyond much more than that just isn’t there yet.

I’ll bet their focus groups and buyer clinics told them exactly that.

GM has ignored buyer and dealer input before when doing major vehicle launches.

They ignored very negative clinic and focus group input in the early 1980’s when they launched the front wheel drive Cadillacs. (Because their “experts” told them oil prices would only go up).

In this case, their “experts” are telling them that the future is autonomous and EV. (Mary Barra has even said that)

The problem is this... GM paid a large amount to make these EV’s... They cost more to make than regular gas guzzling cars... And if they can’t sell this years model now... Who will buy this years model next year, when next years model will be cheaper?

The simple answer is nobody... They will be taking losses on all the models they don’t sell... That doesn’t happen with gas guzzling cars... If they don’t sell one this year, they can sell it next year for a reduced price and still make money... Or the next year, or the next year... They will always make money from the regular gas driven vehicle no matter when they sell it.

If they don’t sell this years EV by next year... In two years, nobody will want it and even if they do sell it... GM will be losing money when they sell it. That’s a terrible business model.

VW-Porsche-Audi have already backtracked.
Ford has backtracked.
GM is scared.
Toyota has said No Thanks.
No word from Dodge yet.

There are a lot of people that don’t have the skills or sense to ride a horse.
We have had horses my whole life, and I don’t really consider myself a horseman. My Wife is exceptional.
It’s not pretty to watch heavy awkward people attempt to mount, let alone ride.

A wonderful plug in car that can burn down your house. One that will soon be banned from public garages, tunnels & ferries. One that you soon won’t be able to get insurance for One that costs the equivalent of $17/gallon....
