Doctor Who returned to screens tonight as part of Children in Need, with a special five-minute scene featuring the Daleks and their creator Davros.
...
Davros, played once again by Julian Bleach, looked different to to how viewers might remember him – and while fans might have assumed that's simply because this particular scene was set prior to the accident that left the character scarred and reliant on his support unit, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has explained that there was more to it than that.
Speaking on new BBC Three companion series Doctor Who Unleashed, Davies said: "We had long conversations about bringing Davros back, because he's a fantastic character, [but] time and society and culture and taste has moved on. And there's a problem with the Davros of old in that he's a wheelchair user, who is evil. And I had problems with that. And a lot of us on the production team had problems with that, of associating disability with evil. And trust me, there's a very long tradition of this.
"I'm not blaming people in the past at all, but the world changes and when the world changes, Doctor Who has to change as well.
"So we made the choice to bring back Davros without the facial scarring and without the wheelchair – or his support unit, which functions as a wheelchair.
"I say, this is how we see Davros now, this is what he looks like. This is 2023. This is our lens. This is our eye. Things used to be black and white, they're not in black and white anymore, and Davros used to look like that and he looks like this now, and that we are absolutely standing by."

Leftism destroys again!!
This time it's one of the greatest fictional villains EVER.
I suppose Davies would get rid of Darth Vader's breathing because it's unfair to asthmatics if he could.

How long before they rename the Cybermen? Are they woke enough to change it to Cyberpersons?
FFS! Who’s going around thinking people in wheelchairs are evil because of Davros? I first started watching Dr. Who in the early 80s on Connecticut Public TV with the Fifth Doctor on weekdays and the Fourth Doctor on weekends. I’ve never thought in all this time that Davros was in a wheelchair, first off. He’s always just been this evil guy doing evil with his band of motorized evil things who happens to be in a similar motorized chair to his motorized evil things. Are there other people thinking people in wheelchairs are police inspectors? Starship captains? Garter and fishnet wearing scientists?

What long tradition? Give some examples. This is modern leftist nuttery. Put everyone into groups based on one characteristic and if one member of that group is portrayed as evil or as a victim then that portrayal applies to all.
You mean Chief Ironside? He wasn't actually on the SFPD during the show, but had been Chief of Detectives before being paralyzed.
Or then there was Jeffery Deaver's quadriplegic detective Lincoln Rhyme, but he wasn't on the NYPD either.
Nope. Time and society and culture and taste has moved LEFT.
Tradition? The only one I can think of is Dr. Strangelove.
Ah yes. Well, that seals it. All people in wheelchairs are evil. </sarcasm>
Cybernauts have been classic Avengers villains so at that much may be safe.
Rats ruin very thing they touch.
>>How long before they rename the Cybermen?
You think they would ever imply that women can be villians?
I could care less. The episodes with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker were the ones I grew up with and will always be my favourites.
Conservatives need to split off and make their own entertainment vehicles... Make our own movies, post them on Rumble... create our own Roku channels, etc.
We can not allow our children and grandchildren to be corrupted by this sick depraved communist culture
Actually it was already established that they used the heads/brains of men and women indiscriminately when building more Cybermen sometime in the newer Dr. Who incarnations.
But they were still called Cybermen.
I am not a nerd.
A bond movie and a Bette Davis flick come to mind...
Must have had more cultural impact with the sensitive men than I would have guessed...
Whovian since 1978, I never will watch Dr. Woke. SHE was never the Doctor. I had hope when I heard that Davies was returning, but this is awful. Between the Target Santa in a wheelchair ornaments and this, you’d think the majority of children are in wheelchairs these days.
There was an episode of Get Smart in which the villain Leadside was in a wheelchair and rode around town in a garbage truck. Not hard to see what show was being parodied.
The days of David Tennant’s Dr Who were the last truly good episodes. It all started going downhill during the latter days of Matt Smith’s Who, and crashed and burned afterwards.
I love Ironside, at least the years Barbara Anderson was there.
