The solution to the social problem in the long run would be to increase the colony’s size to a level that can support reasonable long term social dynamics. Some differentiation in housing preferences should also be allowed. The colony would need to be big enough that people wouldn’t feel like rats trapped a cage.
There is no perfect answer because people are inherently messy. That said, we have plenty of experience with small societies. At some point, it becomes a matter of picking one’s own poison.
The Chinese colonization model will be all men. Then they will send up another team to try and determine why the colony died out.
