Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Board of Education are following the lead of other major cities and eliminating gifted school programs in the name of achieving greater racial and social “equity.” Eleven “high-achieving selective-enrollment schools” will be eliminated, according to Chicago Board of Education CEO Pedro Martinez, to reduce “stratification and inequity.” As we have previously discussed, major cities with failing public education programs are erasing performance gaps in their schools by decapitating the top performers rather than elevating the performance overall. Other schools have also eliminated or lowered proficiency standards to achieve higher passage rates.According to the Daily Mail, the Board will vote today on the Mayor’s plan with the support of the president. The Chicago Tribune blasted Johnson in an editorial for reneging on a campaign promise not to abolish the selective schools.President Jianan Shi has portrayed gifted programs as just adding stress by allowing some students to achieve higher levels of education. Shi declared “the goal is […] to change (the) current competition model so that students are not pitted against one another, schools are not pitted against one another.”Some of these targeted schools are among the nation’s top performers, including Walter Payton College Prep (ranked 10th), Northside College Prep (ranked 37th), and Jones College Prep (ranked 60th). However, these schools only highlight the failure of the system overall. One can imagine how thrilled countries like China must be as we decapitate our educational system to bring down both standards and schools to a low median.

the stupid are easily lead.
Countless times Rush warned us of the left’s soft bigotry of low expectations.
Flat out dumbing our kids down on purpose. These are evildoers. My God be with us and protect us in 2024.
Illegal immigrant children are dying in Chicago shelters. Why? They promised them so much if they came.
The gifted students can go to Harrison Bergeron High instead.
Kurt Vonnegut predicted this many years ago.
Hell, why even have publik ediKashun????
How many Chicago cops does it take to arrest a shoplifter?
Infinite if they are fat female cops!
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Bringing everyone down to the lowest common denominator is going to destroy everything.
Idiocracy.
Great tag...
One more reason for smart people to move out of the Chicago Hellhole...
Time to end government mandated and controlled compulsory schooling. Even private schools must adhere to government regulations in order to operate and be accredited.
This is how school districts self-destruct and take the communities within them down, as well.
An idea ready to launch-——a teacher quit over the school’s opposition to parents rights.
So the parents pooled their money and hired the teacher to home-school their kids.
“major cities with failing public education programs are erasing performance gaps in their schools by decapitating the top performers rather than elevating the performance overall. “
this is the basic method that ALL socialistic socialites utilized to achieve “equality”: lower everything and everyone to the lowest common denominator ... lowering and destroying is infinitely easier than raising and creating ... but hey, everyone and everything is “equal”, equally awful ...
I have not kept up with what teachers are being paid nowadays.
But if 30 parents would pay $2,000 a year for their child to be taught, such a group of parents would be paying a teacher $60,000 a year to teach 30 students.
Maybe this number is unrealistic , however I’m sure parents would pay far more than $2,000 a year to send their child to a private school. Assuming they wanted to send their child to a private school to avoid a public school education.
This amazing re-definition of “high achieving” (HA) is nauseating...
What is HA, since the late 1970s, would have been considered “abject failure” back when the United States still had a public school system...
A key indicator of the communist’s success was, in the 1990s, when a 1950s high school graduation proficiency test was given to many of the government indoctrinators teaching in the government schools and found that only about 10% of those teachers were able to pass the test...
In other words, since the 1980s we have had low-IQ morons creating more low-IQ morons...
Since the late 1970s, the government schools have had ONLY one goal...
That goal is to create mentally-deficient, mind-numbed serfs who are happy to exist under any dark tyranny...
It has been a smashing success...
Notice that high-achieving homeschoolers (who are mostly self-taught) don’t need “gifted programs.”
Public school education should be mediocre. It should be low-cost, and school taxes should be low. Public school should be the last resort for people with no other option.
Then, more parents would look to private schools, homeschooling, tutoring programs, dual-credit college courses, etc.
Public school is a government handout, like Medicaid and food stamps and subsidized housing.
But, somehow, today’s parents feel entitled to everything. They expect government to educate their children.
These demanding, entitled parents are the reason why public school has been able to monopolize the education business, drive up the cost of education, dictate to textbook publishers, and on and on.
