Almost. If I can convince you to be substandard in some way, I can create a hedgemony around my position by reducing your ability to compete. Black pride is being used to reduce the ability of blacks to compete. It is the same with public schools. If we were to take what is learned in public schools today and teach it 100 years ago, kids would have finished their education by grade 5. There is no way that most children can have their most productive adult life with a grade 5 education. That’s why rich people send their children to private school.
Exactly right. By advocating for Black English this way it really will hold these folks back.
Most grammatical features of Black English are also present in southern/rural/working class white English. I don’t see anyone arguing that this group should insist on writing their papers in poor south Mississippi dialect.
But you see, they have to quickly calculate how many Nike shoes vs. leather jackets vs. bling they can shoplift without going over $950. Math is soooo racist.
