What's going on with Beef?

Young people not consuming it.

There is nothing better than a good steak. It's so easy to cook as well so I'm surprised to hear this about the younger generation.

I love it!

I love beef. I tolerate chicken because it's cheap and high in protein. I wouldn't give a spit about pork except for bacon and baby back ribs done on the smoker.

I did my part to prop up the beef industry yesterday with a 6 lb prime rib roast, it was sublime!

God obviously wants us to eat beef, why else would he have made cows out of steak?

The price of beef has gone up so much that I only purchase the 10lb roll of hamburger when it’s on sale for 1.99/lb. I haven’t purchased any roasts in over a year because the sale price is still too expensive to me, and I don’t buy much steak because I have no idea how to cook it. Even chicken has gone up. I always purchased fresh chicken from the butcher but now I buy in bulk when the frozen is on sale for 1.99/lb.

1 Timothy 4:3 Context

1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 4For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:....

There are no beef nuggets or beef tenders. Same thing for pork.

But, there are chicken bits places popping up all over the place. Young people consume their chicken in bite size pieces, as part of the same generations that have never had a vitamin that is not sold as a gummy.

And the KFC-style chicken place is out of fashion. Today the primary side for chicken bits is french fries. All of the newer style chicken bit places around us make and sell lots of fries, but I don't think any of them even offer mashed potatoes or coleslaw as sides. And only one out of 3 that I have been to offer chicken still on the bone; the others only offer a chicken product that may or may not have had a face at one time.

I suppose the next generation of chicken places will offer chicken gummies, or maybe Soylent Chick.

Our local Sam’s Club has ground rib eye for about $4 to $5 a pound. Amazing burgers.

I asked the person behind the counter about this, and he said that the consumption of rib eye steaks and roasts was down and they had to do something with the meat, since beef cattle don’t change shape with the market demand for particular cuts.

(I also use it in chili. It doesn’t fall apart into mush like other ground beef)

Most of the young people I know love a good steak. They also love cookouts. All too often these studies from academia are funded by grants for a particular result. Always follow the money.

I bought half a cow last year, and getting another in February. Got some venison to go through before then to make freezer space.

The producers do not drive up the price. All the middle men and regulatory wonks are responsible.

I eat one meal a day. Usually a big steak with a lot of greens and mushrooms. I eat my steak medium rare and it’s easy and fast to cook on my cast iron skillets. I use butter to grease the pan. And it’s cheaper and satisfies me better than McDonald’s!

We eat beef 3-4 times per week. When I was younger I used to eat steak 4 nights a week.

The low fat diet fad began the decline in beef consumption. Fatty meat was cast as the villain in the heart/metabolic disease battle and pretty much everything after that mistake has made metabolic diseases worse. Families buying meat today are children of this mistake.

There is something wrong with the food in America. I know many Freepers grow or raise their own but this is an exception. For most it has become bland. The supermarket steaks, even the premium ones aren’t that good.

I had a real eye opener when I moved to Australia. I never knew eggs had so much flavour. Meats also so much better. Not sure what is wrong with the food in America, but I know Americans deserve better. Maybe it’s the antibiotics or just the extreme corporate farming/ranching. I really don’t know. I just pop into the local Costco and the locally raised meats and animal products just taste so much better. Maybe similar to the 1970s in America (I was just a kid then so I may be mistaken).

Each trip back leads to a new disappointment in food quality. Even the fast food here by the restaurants I try to avoid is better. I’ve got kids so McDonald’s occasionally happens. It still sucks but it is definitely better quality. Trying beef in America is just not worth the price for the quality. It is slightly more expensive here but worth every cent. The chicken is also phenomenally better, pork is definitely better and the lamb is fantastic enough to give beef a run for its money.

Yes we all got taught that chicken was better for our health in the late 70s through the 90s and that altered our eating habits even here in Australia. I prefer beef and lamb and am doing my part to support those industries. Unfortunately my wife prefers mobile veggies (chicken). My friends that I trust are recommending some wholesale butchers that are supposed to be even better. I’m actually afraid of finding beef that tastes even better. My love for America will sadden even more as I realise how much all of you have lost.

Maybe part of the restoration of America can be started by getting back the quality food you have lost.
