This guy joked about washing his grandma's cast iron skillet ... judging by the replies, it nearly gave millions of people heart attacks 😂😭

Making hamburgers....... first get the pan smoking hot......
then salt the bottom of the hot pan......wait 1-2 min, then add the burgers.

They turn out deliciously juicy and the pan is in good shape as well.

Oh my! If anyone washed my cast iron skillets in such a manner, I would use the 8 in skillet on their skull! I have skillets from my mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law. Cleaning consists of rinsing and wiping out only. No harsh detergents and certainly no dishwasher! I have my mother’s divided cornbread and corn-pone skillets and use them a couple of times a week to make cornbread. M-i-l’s square skillet is used to cook meats. I’ve tried a few of those high-dollar cooking sets. They work better as animal dishes than they do cooking.

The crust is called “fond” and is unavoidable. You can release it from the pan by deglazing it with liquid while the pan is hot on the burner. Just pour some water on it while gently agitating it with your spatula and the boiling action will lift it right off.

Fond is full of flavor thanks to something called the Maillard reaction. Chefs like to use the fond to make sauces:

I’ll try that. Seems like I heard that about fifty years ago, but I’d forgotten it. Thanks!

All I know is that when I was a child there was a brief period of time when my mom’s eggs tasted like soap and I complained profusely. She must have figured it out, but to this day I can’t stand the thought of soapy eggs.

Boiling water and a brush will do it nicely.

What’s the best way to get rust off the inside of those pans?

Yup! Nice and shiny just like when it was bought. If people start to scream you can always tell them, it’s OK, you used some Teflon spray to coat the surface. Works like magic!

One of the guys at the fire station would come unwound when we would just happen to be talking the cast iron out of dishwasher every time he walked in.

It never was washed there but we did it just to get him going. Yea, it’s kind of like being in grade school…..

My now elderly mother in law is banned from touching ANYTHING in my kitchen after she used scouring pad and comet cleanser on my best seasoned thirty year old skillets ( at the time) that i had with me in Georgia and Florida forEVER. That’s fifteen years ago that she skillet murdered my best cooking friend, and i still won’t forget that. Yeah, i forgive her because i love her, but stay outta my kitchen. She’s only allowed to use her toaster oven.

Took me years for both skillets and cook to recover. Cooking is therapy. I cook because punching people is frowned upon.

A sandblaster works wonders

A hot tank filled with boiling caustic soda does well also!

My dad would just break one of my mom’s favorite dishes when he “helped” to do the dishes.
