Winter Freeze Threats Come Back To Bite Russia As Power Outages Spread
Newsweek ^ | 1/9/2024 | Isabel van Brugen

Russian President Vladimir Putin's threats to let Europe "freeze" over winter have come back to bite his country as power outages spread nationwide.

Tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region alone after a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow, on January 4.

Residents in multiple regions including Rostov, St. Petersburg, Volgograd, and Voronezh have also been affected by lengthy power outages, and some have resorted to filming video appeals as they grapple with the subzero temperatures. In one of the clips, Russians complain that they are freezing and that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find."

Others are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

All it has to do is rain a bit and our power goes out. Our city could never survive a Russian winter.

Another Isabel van Brugen piece. She always writes doom & floom for Russia, but none have panned out yet.

Russian cities usually use zone heating, where the entire city gets pumped hot water from a central plant to keep the apartments warm

A few cities in the US use a form of it, from Austin TX up to several in North Dakota (looking at you, Minot AFB).

A burst hot water pipe is not desirable ...

At least they have real fur coats to keep them warm. Russians are at least allowed to be creative. Here in Upstate NY...we freeze until the power goes back on. Sure wish I had a gas stove. You put a pan of water in the oven....and it’ll take the chill off in no time.

The videos posted by the Russians without heat in the affected areas are wild. Their apartment building lobbies and stairwells are something out of a nightmare.

"they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters"

Winters are rough in Russia? Who knew? If I were freezing and the choices were gas or electric for heat, then gas it is. Takes the gas-powered water boiler, generator and transmission line middlemen out of the equation.

Oh no, tens of thousands of Russians without power! How many in US are without power today? Tens of thousands. This tomfoolery you’ve posted today rivals your obsession with Ruskie eggs.

I’ve had family living in Bossier City (Barksdale). They seemed to think it quite a bit warmer there than Michigan for most of the year.

Ironic. Loss of heating was supposed to happen to Ukraine last winter. Loss of Russian natural gas was supposed to freeze out Europe. Now 25% of Moscow is without power.

I have no clue what you mean by your response of Fahrenheit?!

Most homes are not made to handle temps that low here. Chance of snow. We will probably see some older folks freeze to death. Because the cold, actually claims more lives than does the heat.

“Are you trying to tell us” you’ve never been to Russia and know nothing about the topic at hand?
