Some Say Trisomy 18 Babies Are ‘Incompatible With Life’ — Those Who Love Them Say They’re Made for Joy
National Catholic Register ^ | January 11, 2024 | Susan Klemond

In December 2022, an amniocentesis revealed that Colt and Tara Emerson’s baby, Deacon, had full Trisomy 18, a chromosomal disorder that often results in birth defects, including delayed development and intellectual disabilities.

In sharing their diagnosis, doctors told the College Station, Texas, couple “a myriad of things that could be going wrong,” recalled Tara, 43. The Emersons’ baby may not be born alive, or he would die very soon after birth, they said. If he did live, he would require a lot of medical intervention.

The medical staff offered little hope but offered to help the Emersons abort Deacon, despite Texas’ abortion bans. The couple, who are practicing Christians with four other children, oppose abortion, but Tara admitted that with the hopeless and even terrifying outlook they’d been given, it was all difficult to work through.

Many parents receive equally bleak prognoses when their babies are diagnosed with Trisomy 18 and other fetal anomalies. This includes Justin and Kate Cox, another Texas couple whose baby last year was identified as having full Trisomy 18. By seeking a medical exception to Texas’ three abortion bans so she could abort her child in the Lone Star State, Kate Cox became the center of a high-profile challenge to Texas abortion law in late 2023.

The bias against babies with disabilities, including those with Trisomy 18, along with the sometimes-unfounded claims that being pregnant with these children endangers their mothers’ health, belie the fact that when children with Trisomy 18 are given hope and medical care, especially early, many thrive as blessings to their families and communities.

What is incompatible with life is playing a football game in Kansas City tomorrow. Players on both teams should go on strike and move it to a warmer climate. What good is home field when you may get frostbite?

To this day the ice bowl is legendary. Part of the greatness of football is the fact that the elements can play a part of played outdoors. And I say this as a lifelong Rams fan whose teams suffered horrible playoff losses in part because of bad weather on Minnesota, but even in Los Angeles (mudslides).

Vince Lombardi and John Madden had a different attitude, and they are comparatively authoritative.

Nice too see the entertainment industry has accomplished their goal keeping Americans distracted and stupid. A thread about congenital birth defects and the simple minded can’t resist the urge to talk about a bunch of morons chasing a ball in the cold. I weep for this country.

God is infinitely wise.
Lives lived as long as required to suit is his holy perect will, even if it is only to give one person joy for a short time is worth every second.

I’ve always felt that there are many things more important than a football game, especially one being played in adverse conditions. I guess if it is agreed to by the players, then what can I say? You are taking your own risks. If it is not unanimously agreed to by the players, then that should also be considered.

I know when devastating news is received that accepting Gods will in the matter will lift the burden. The future, whatever it may be, can then be faced with calm certainty.

I want to watch the game just to see the frostbiting effects. Why anyone would attend the game in person, is beyond me. I’m not going to suscribe to Pee-cock just to watch it though.
