Three “non-performing” songwriters – Hillary Lindsey, Timothy Mosley (Timbaland) and Dean Pitchford – and members of two groups – Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) and Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (Steely Dan) – are the 2024 inductees into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

DEI influenced this? UGH At least Fagan & Becker got in as White men.
One of the wonderful lyrics from Timbaland,”Let me see ya strip, you can get a tip cause I like, I like, I like… I ain’t got no Visa”
The list of nominated songwriters who weren’t chosen this year ought to make those who were chosen feel both proud and humbled. Performing songwriters who weren’t chosen this year are Bryan Adams; Randy Bachman & Burton Cummings; Debbie Harry, Chris Stein & Clem Burke (Blondie); Tracy Chapman; George Clinton; Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons & Michael McDonald (The Doobie Brothers); David Gates; Ann Wilson & Nancy Wilson (Heart); Kenny Loggins; and Chuck D and Flavor Flav (Public Enemy).
Those Steely Dan writers should have been inducted 20 years ago.
I like REM but Michael Stipe is a flaming leftist. His speech inducting Nirvana into Rock n Roll HOF included major bashing of Reagan and the 80’s in general. There is a huge pompous self importance so many artist have as if all life would stop without them. I love the arts and I love music. I appreciate what they contribute. But I am sure not going to idolize them.

Yeah might have been nice had they done it when Walter Becker was still alive.
REM sucked in every aspect.
That Heart is not in is an epic travesty.
He’s not just a flaming religion-losing leftist.
How were Fagen and Becker not already there?
Tracy Chapman had like one big hit. She’d be a pure DEI virtue signaling pick. I am glad they didn’t recognize her.
agree
Where is the great Al Stewart’s name?
The only good music REM did was with Warren Zevon as the Hindu Love Gods. They produced one blues album around 1991 and it is excellent.
i hate REM. But happy to see Walter and Donald got a nod.
Michael Stipe is an idiot, typical leftist ‘sensitive artist’.
REM at the old Omni Coliseum in Atlanta in November 1995 closing out their Monster tour is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. They were rocking out before what was basically a home town crowd with three sold out shows. They knew when to hang it up ard retired gracefully.
Heck to the yes. Weird that Jimmy Destri isn't listed. He wrote a ton of their stuff.
I personally think they owe their careers to that writing session, however long the writing lasted. It gave them three solid albums of material that created a rabid fan base who propelled them on to bigger and lesser things. IMO. IRS REM is unique and amazing. Warner Bros and any other iteration of label that I'm not aware of was just hit-and-miss weird pop. Nothing that would have built the fan base that got them there. I guess that is often the case.
And Michael Stipe is one of the first Shut Up and Sing disappointments in my path into reality-based adulthood.
